They were only obsessed with body count and while eventually it is true that we were actually finally winning especially after the failure of the tet offensive the media coverage of the war had made it extremely disliked leading to a massive drop in volunteers (which led to them having to bring in a lot of unwilling draftees) and a loss of support by the voting population and the politicians back home. Essentially the vietcong won the war by making the people of the US turn against their own military.
