The first half of the 90s was despair for the Finns. I now realize how happy and privileged I was a child. My mother couldn't get a job because of the recession, so she stayed with me and my little sister, those were the happy days and we even went to Turkey for holiday. But my father had income so good he was able to take care of our economy. But I remember how the kid from the neighborhood always came to beg if he can have breakfast with us because his unemployed parents suffering from the hangover. I remember when my godfather committed a suicide after losing his business and my father tried to explain me why people end up in situation like that when they see no other way out. I remember the other neighborhood kid getting beaten up by his drunk father and often staying the night at my place because the police came to pick that guy up. I remember my uncle cursing how "fucking African niggers" can get full service from our government while half of the population is lining up for food. Now I get what he meant...

I was born in the mid 80's. Just young enough to not realize the hell that broke loose in the break of the decade, I just remember my parents starting to stay later and later for work. Sometimes I went to stand around in the middle of the winter at a sports field at the end of our home street just waiting for a sign of them coming home. My mom was luckily employed by the government in the fledgling IT field so they couldn't afford to lay off their experts, and dad was one of the few entrepreneurs who survived the crash, but for him it meant laying off all employees and run the whole shop alone with two other guys he founded the business with. Three guys working printing machines and die cutters to desperately keep the place afloat while everything around them was crashing and burning.
Meanwhile I just wanted a Nintendo like that cool kid in our class. Little did I know his brother had died in a car accident and his low income parents scraped together everything they had to at least guarantee their only remaining son a happy childhood.

Jobs were plentiful and unemployment low.
If you were fresh out of college you could find a job in a month than a year it takes now.
And lots of video games came out so kids at the time were happy.
Politics and the culture war was pretty stale for most of the decade. except conservacucks were still getting mad for gays coming out of the closet.

Suicide, alcoholism, just trying to survive day by day... I have big family, 13 cousins, and since I was the second youngest of them I often got their old clothes and toys. It was very community centered life, you had to trust in people around you. Those who were too ashamed to ask for help just gave up.

80s was glorious for Finland because the economy was so good, however it hit back hard when people were so reckless with our economy. The recession in the 90s was worse than the one in the 30s, but I'm not even sure if this time is any better, it's just something you just "have to get used to" while we keep pandering sand niggers.
