Autism is a spectrum of disorders, which has a list that is growing longer and longer. As more disorders are added, more are diagnosed. Hell, "cell phone addiction" is under the autism spectrum disorders now. You didn't have that a couple years ago, and it wasn't even a possibility a decade ago. That's an exaggeration, but most were by 18-22 and the further back you go the more likely you'd find people who did marry at 16.
The main thing isn't just age though, it's the fact that marriage is no longer seen as the responsibility of two families not just two individuals, and the parents no longer play a role in finding mates.
Not even advocating forced marriages or anything, but meeting people via school, work or bars are all horrible ideas compared to being introduced to the family friend, etc.

As far as genetics go I think it's mostly that people are starting to reproduce at later ages. Obviously the integrity of germ cells (sperm and eggs) diminishes over time.
Environmental factors probably include a generally more isolated culture due to the internet. Interacting online and getting extreme life-philosophy positions and an odd sense of humor makes it difficult to reconciliate that when socializing with people in person. This combined with the fact that one doesn't have to interact with people in person further aggravates the issue.

I have no evidence to back this up but I think it has to do with two things. People are having kids older so the female eggs and male sperm have degraded. The way people treat their children. They don't want anything bad to happen to them and shelter them, they don't learn about consequences for their actions. A lot of people with autism spectrum disorders such as asperger's can function more-or-less normally and have been doing so all along.
They had more trouble with certain aspects of life (as do a lot of people) and just had to face them and adapt as well as they could because there was no alternative.
They're doing worse nowadays for the same reasons that other children and young adults are doing worse. Lowering standards and lack of discipline. I think it hits them much harder than regular people. They desperately need rules and structure in order to function. Both are currently being stripped away from modern life.
They used to have to adapt. Now they are told that the world should adapt to them.
