Depends. I smoke after work and I'll take two puffs and then I'm good until bedtime where I'll take two more. That's 4 small smoke inhalations which is equivalent to the first few centimeters of a cigarette. A whole cigarette is many times that. The average smoker smokes 5-20 cigarettes a day. That's a lot of smoke compared to my 4 puffs. Chances are I would inhale more at a bonfire.
That completely ignores the fact that tobacco is fertilized with carcinogens on top of the carcinogens which are naturally occurring in tobacco. THEN there is even further carcinogens in the form of FSC and the materials used in filters. When you combine this with the volume of smoke inhaled by the average cigarette smoker, this is where problems start to arise.

Someone smoking 1 cigarette a day is better off than someone who smokes two packs a day. If you do smoke, you should roll your own. Yeah of course. I get "pipe tobacco" which is labeled that for tax reasons, it's cheaper. The only thing that really sucks are you need a machine like the one in my picture above, a good one will run you at least 30, going up to 100 for electric ones. And of course, you have to roll your own. But get a plastic cig pack, sit down for 10 minutes and roll your entire pack. Depending on how much you smoke you should be at least good for a day. There already is some very good research on vaping.
Essentially the safety of the act comes down to two things:
The temperature at which you vaporize the carrier liquid (~54C, the absolute minimum, is best)
Figuring out how those heated up, aerosolized flavorings affect the throat airways and lung tissue (practically no data)
There have been toxicology tests done on in-vitro tissue samples (this means in petri dishes, not fertilized eggs oddly) comparing tobacco plants, extracted nicotine, smoke products of tobacco, liquid flavoring chemicals, and smoke products of vaporizers.
Essentially vaping is from 1-to-7 and 1-to-25 less harmful depending on the flavors, delivery method, temperature, etc.
But, again, this is just for outside flesh contact. We have no studies on lung health, though the lack of carcinogens is very small and the release of nanograms of metal particles are so small that they are practically the same as background air.
In short:
If you're a smoker, switch to vaping it's going to save your life and save a lot of money.
If you don't smoke, don't vape.

Light smokers are still doing themselves a service but my sister is in her mid 30's now and due to her "light" smoking habits she still has good skin.
