I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Yes Linux users know that Linux itself is not actually an OS, but you know damn well that if someone asks you what OS you are running you will say "insert Linux flavor" Linux. For instance, I'm running Debian Linux.

You sent the attachment in Microsoft Word format, a secret proprietary format, so I cannot read it. If you send me the plain text, HTML, or PDF, then I could read it.

Sending people documents in Word format has bad effects, because that practice puts pressure on them to use Microsoft software. In effect, you become a buttress of the Microsoft monopoly. This specific problem is a major obstacle to the broader adoption of GNU/Linux. Would you please reconsider the use of Word format for communication with other people?

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.

Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.

One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?

(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.
>>
Manjaro master race. Access to AUR only spent 20 min. setting it up . Not cucked by Debian. BTW as soon as you install nvidia drivers or intel microcode im pretty sure that is your NSA backdoor
>>
>>71136403
Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it.

You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.
>>
>>71136488
Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?

If there is a moral buried in this rant, maybe it is this:

Be grateful for your abilities and your incredible success and your considerable fame. Continue to use that success and fame for good, not evil. Also, be especially grateful for Linux' huge contribution to that success. You, RMS, the Free Software Foundation, and GNU software have reached their current high profiles largely on the back of Linux. You have changed the world. Now, go forth and don't be a nag.

Thanks for listening.

It generally is great if you don't care about petty things such as games and others. I believe this is the kind of OS that will appease to the normies the most because it's easy as hell to use and basically norms don't use computers for much more than Internet browsing, provided you don't tell them it's Linux and sperg on the GNU license "freedom" bullshit. I don't understand how could retailers not provide computers with it pre-installed instead of a Windows license that usually costs +$100. The only excuse Windows has is a few programs that are Microsoft only (Photoshop, etc.) and you can always have a [Pirate, if you want] Windows running in a Virtual Machine inside your Linux distribution which is safer than using it directly.

Cheaper computers + Easier to use + Zero surveillance from government crony Microsoft

Deleted Windows like two years ago and I haven't needed it for pretty much anything since then. There's lots of stuff in it that Windows doesn't have, by the way. If you haven't tried it ever you should download an easy to use distro (distribution) like Ubuntu or Linux Mint. Ignore the spergs that tell you to use any others unless you're actually working in IT or want to lose an incredible amount of time in configuring and fixing shit you couldn't care less about.

Installing is quite easy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKI024wUTUw
And you can have two OS's working in your computer at the same time. I did this for a year or so until I realized I wasn't using Windows anymore. You can, in fact, test the OS before even installing it by making a bootable pendrive. There's no excuse, guys.

There's no point in dual booting as far as I can tell. I've done it, but I just don't see why you'd do it. Windows runs so much better on the desktop. You can do it if you want, I guess. The only issue is Microsoft won't tell the linux guys how their files are indexed, or some bullshit. So some system files lose some kind of flag within windows and you have to run chkdsk to sort it out. There's no risk of file loss, it's just some system files bullshit.

/g/ says it only happens when your distro mounts and reads your windows partition, but it kept happening to me even when I wouldn't use it to read the other partition.

There's also some usb issues depending on your motherboard, I think if you have the 'smart' or 'auto' usb 3.0 setting in your bios, when you go from the gnu splash screen to windows, it fucks up your usb peripherals. So that's a setting you have to change.

And besides that, idk, I dual booted ubuntu and windows 7 for a long time but flash runs like ass on linux, there was tearing all the time in videos. I had to use chrome to get smooth playback on twitch and youtube and netflix. Obviously no games on linux.

Also I don't think you can encrypt your linux partition side by side with windows. I read that in a wiki but don't know if it still applies. You can encrypt the home folder though.

Personally it wasn't worth it for me. Linux on a laptop is just easier.

There is literally no reason to use flash. If your university uses it for online courses, transfer. Flash is shit.

How are you going to call some else an autist after posting what you did? It's Gnu/Linux btw

If you don't have any experience with Linux, just wait for all of the compatibility features that are coming out. Flip on your bash shell in Windows and run cmatrix if you want to feel like a hacker.

Cucks use Windows and other Microshit products. Microsoft lays off American workers while calling for a million more Pajeets (claiming they can't find talent) to make it impossible for Americans to get jobs. I don't know if Apple is much better. Besides, Stallman himself is irrelevant enough and his politics are even more so.

same, very good for clustering and machinelearning, "easy" to set up everything you need just right.

Bit bound due to the uni etc, but ofc with nix no probs just changing, just almost all tools (kinda specialized tools 99,9% never will use) are just there by apt-get, .deb but always some tinkering.

Drawback; slow updates.. often need to manually get latest src and compile my self. Special needs though. Considering an archbased solution at least on workstation.

Literal jewery

Didn't they get a lot of hate for saying:
