I only buy stuff online when I can't find it in the local stores.
Why would someone order something when they could just to the local store?

Malls where a shitty concept from the start.
They were supposed to be the equivalent of a town center with shops. Instead it just became shops and more shops.

Tear 'em down. Build condos. More cost effective.

>>
>>71118633

No lie, though. My fondest memories of young adulthood are in the Riverwalk Mall in San Antonio, which -is- more like a town center.

I think we're losing something by losing malls. Like, in America, we don't really have very many nice public spaces meant for hanging around. So the idea of a space engineered to be comfortable, attractive, and entertaining to hang around, fuelled by the consumerism happening around it is something we're losing.

Online shopping is reaching a point where businesses just expect us to sit at home and get shit delivered to us and never interact with others.
>>
Why would it matter to me if malls go out of business?

Amazon increases the price of products if you sign up for Amazon Prime(their subscription service for free shipping), thus completely negating the idea of paying an annual fee for free shipping.

Then they got caught putting pressure on third-party sellers who set their own prices to do the same.

I couldn't care less if that happens to my local mall.

If I check a price on my work computer (never logged in and no association could be made) I can open up amazon prime on my mobile and order the same item for the same price... where do you get this bullshit you're spewing? Do you just make it up as you go?
>>
>>71119162
I think this is just a UI thing?

Like if one seller has "Uiharu Kazari Alter To Aru Kagaku no Railgun (PVC Figure) [JAPAN]" for $45 + $5 shipping, but it's also available through Prime for $48 + $0 shipping, it will default you to the Prime one if you have Prime, since $48 is less than $50.

This is capitalism. People charged high amounts of money for a product you needed and didnt want to put in the effort to go far away to find it. So you were forced to pay the higher price.

Now that you can get your goods online for much less than instore and you dont need to leave the house why should you owe these guys your money. They overcharged and they suffer for it.

Why would you pay for something at a higher price in stores when you could just order it from the source lol.
>>
>>71117988

I won't miss it at all

last time I was downtown I was trying to buy a new headset for my computer. Everything was marked up at least 40% from the amazon prices and the selection was extremely limited. When I finally picked a headset, which wasn't cheap, or the style I wanted, I take them home and find the microphone doesn't work.

So TL;DR I fucking ordered a pair off amazon that fit the way I want, match my computer's color, and have great sound, all for cheaper than the ones I drove around town to buy.

If people want me to go to malls, make there a reason to go there.
>>
>>71120050

Just because an algorithm does it behind the scenes doesn't mean it's not a bait-and-switch.

Amazon is committing fraud, using the secrecy of their algorithm as a shield.

It goes like this:
Item x is sold at the dingle berry store for $20 + $5 shipping.

Item x is sold by Amazon at $22 + $5 shipping.

If you have prime, shipping from Amazon and participating sellers is free.

Dingle berry doesn't participate in so the $22 + $0 is displayed because it's cheaper overall.

And that's a fantastic option when the weather is really nice.

Most malls that fail to the point of being abandoned and/or demolished do so because the area demographic starts centering on the lowest common denominator. Another mall, in a less urbanized area springs up, and the cycle repeats every 10-20 years. I hate "outdoor malls" because they're not climate controlled, have atrocious layouts and parking arrangements, and don't offer the "walk by and take a look" feature of the indoor mall (including the walkway kiosks). But I hate more going to a large mall on a weekend and feeling like you're likely to see a shooting at any moment.

When I was a kid in the Soviet Union, we had to walk from our village 2 km through the mud to the bus stop and then wait for an hour till damn bus will come. It was almost as empty road, as you could see in Nevada desert, with lonely trucks once in a while passing through. Except that it was in the middle of USSR and there were many villages like this around and a city nearby.
Oh yeah, almost forgot - in a village we had one local store (I say - one, cause there were no other stores whatsoever) and there we could buy bread, tea, soviet cigarettes without filter and the rest of the shelves demonstrated lines after lines of one single item, like resin boots or bucket.

"The Mall" is probably going to be the shortest lived type of building in the history of mankind.

Started in the 60's slowly catches on, then explodes into growth during the 80's and 90's then the internet. No new malls made, existing ones just waiting to become unprofitable enough whereby they are sold, or torn down.

In that case Target certainly didn't do their market research. Canadian Walmarts are usually 100% acceptable. There is always some immigrant family feeding letting their children eat straight out of the produce section and some ornery old people looking to get pissed at something, but nothing so egregious that made people flock in droves to target
They also really should have had their supply chain worked out before the opened up. You only make one first impression, and nobody likes seeing empty shelves and two cashiers

Bruh I was at the riverwalk mall last month and it was fucking slam packed. Remember in '98 when it was somewhat populated with 70% whites and 30% beaners? Now it's 95% beaners and ALWAYS fucking slammed. I was shocked to see it so active. If there's one thing saving malls in Texas, it's the beaners.

I buy a lot of firearms, and I used to have the "support your local ma+pa shop" mentality...

But no local store (chain or locally owned) can match the prices I find online, and I avoid sales tax by buying out of state. Saved over $2000 in sales tax last year by doing that.

I do buy clothing in person though- but I only shop clearance racks. Why pay 500% more for something that does the same damn thing?
>>

they tried re-purposing an old mall in my hometown. A non-profit bought the building and turned most of the space into a youth center. despite the non-profit tax incentives, rental revenue, and state/federal grants, it failed and the whole thing was razed.

You cna't simply do other things with buildings of that size. They are expensive hulks that rquire extensive maintenance just to keep within code.

Several years ago I've read American novel where part of the story was about decline of local shops (small, traditional stores) due to rising Walmart monopoly. Part of the plot was about father of main character, who lost his business eventually and committed suicide (as a normal American he had a gun).
That was, in somewhat exaggerated manner, of course, reflection of author's experience.
So, we see justice.

Fuck that OP. I'd have everything delivered if I could. I've already switched to buying most of my groceries online with Prime Pantry. I only go to the store now for produce and meat. The rest is delivered to my door. Once we have higher quality body scanners, I'll order all of my clothes online too since automated factories will be able to custom tailor clothes to fit my body rather than mass produced junk in sizes determined by an Army study in the 1930s. Online shopping isn't a complete replacement for physical stores... yet. Probably always will be a few items that people will want to buy in person but for the most part, being able to have everything delivered is a huge time saver, not to mention saving on gas and generally lower prices.

The only malls that can survive are, unsurprisingly, ones with lots of pedestrian traffic in urban areas. Ones out in suburbs are straight up becoming blight because their core demographic is both aging and going online.

>>71126336

It wasn't so much "decline" as it was falling out of style. From 1950 to about 2008, people moved out to suburbs where there are only chain stores next to freeways and artery roads. Developers don't give a shit about non-chain stores. But they aren't gone, they were always a thing inside cities.

>>
>>71126749

more often than not zoning laws are an impediment on development, used by local homeowners to increase the values of their homes by constricting supply of housing

Look at California, homeowners in most cities in the bay area and LA stop all development so that their houses are worth more. In turn, rents shoot up. Which is double good for them since they are then allowed to price gouge renters. Meanwhile income taxes are raised since property taxes cannot be.
>>

Most of those buildings are falling apart because they're examples of shoddy suburban expansion meant to be thrown up as cheaply and quickly as possible. They're like 80s GM quality. Add on the fact that most of those malls haven't been profitable enough to afford upkeep and it's a wonder they haven't starated falling down on their own in a gentle breeze.

It's cheaper and easier to tear them down and start over than it would be to renovate.

Malls have nothing of value anymore.

>Mall doesn't have a proper food court (yet) and the new one will probably be mostly Asian food like a Panda Express

>Mall doesn't have a grocery store

>Mall hasn't had a theater since the 1980's

>Mall hasn't had an arcade since the late 1990's

>Mall doesn't have an electronics store to buy computer hardware, modern appliances (SEARS sells outdated crap) vehicle audio sets, wires, etc.

>Even H&M, the only clothing for slim men, cut their men's section by over half, replacing it with more Women's shit.

Until a mall sells me combat boots, a PC game, a terabyte SSD, and jeans in size tall (above 32 length) that aren't baggy, and food that is more than chink food or a Red Robin's, I'll consider returning. Other than that, I'm ordering online. I mean, shit. Topman, where I order my /fa/-tier pants, gives me 70% off every other day to the point where they spam my email inbox.

It's just a drag to do so, in this country the only people known to love malls are teenage girls. If pressed to go, a man will make a bee-line straight to the store they seek and come back out as soon as possible

This is the common conception of "the mall" here. It's a place where men take women to make them happy. That doesn't seem to be the case anymore, women have jumped on the online shopping craze and gave it wings. They were the driving force behind malls and they are the ones who will hammer the final nail in it's coffin

Make smaller cities, and stores that sell what people NEED.

Downtown areas of suburb cities or small towns suffer because they sell things people don't need, such as antiques. We don't need 5 antique shops downtown. Nobody needs them, few want them, and the place is rather quiet. Where's the store for shoes? For electronics? For pants? For guns? Instead, it's either open the same store as the one across the street, which is either hardware, propane, or antiques in my downtown, or not open one at all, hence why it's quiet and dead.

Small villages in the middle ages worked better. Everyone had a role. You had a baker, a blacksmith, a guardsman, a butcher, candle maker, etc. Not copy-pasted stores. People had incentives to buy things.
