Are you talking about in Star Trek or now?

Because in ST that's exactly the case. Which is why communism works there, because there's cornucopia technology so we don't need any NKVD shitheads roaming around making everyone equal.

M2E and E2M technology + nearly limitless clean energy = post-scarcity, eliminating the major impediment to any functioning form of socialism or communism because it gets rid of the "who gets what" question that capitalism solves by allowing market pressure to determine value, rather than some abstraction about "fairness."

So, until I can tell my wall to get me a burger, hot, and coke, ice cold, it's a fantasy.

There's still a very defined limit to what we could do. A universally "fair" distribution of resources and living standards would, at the very best, have most of us moving from first world countries to ex-soviet bloc shit-tier setups.

Star Trek posits that we have technology that lets you turn literal shit into energy which you can then turn into an artificial organ or something. It's just plain not going to happen for awhile, if ever. To attain the gini coefficient of the Federation we'd have to live in Romania-tier homes with rural chink food levels.

And then where would that get us?

things cant be created at will. you need a replicator. the replicator needs energy, an enormous amount. To create that energy you need an anti-matter generator, which is a rarity in the galaxy, available to only the top 1%, such as Starfleet.

>Why do you resist? We only wish to raise quality of life, for all species.

It's like lefty Trekkies didn't even watch the fucking show. Yes, it says humanity has a lot of shit it still needs to evolve past, but when watched in its ENTIRETY, Star Trek does not neatly ramify either left wing or right wing ideas. It excoriates the tendencies of both in different contexts.

The fact that you don't seem to hear right wing Star Trek fans--and there are many--trying to spin the show in their favor all the time suggests that maybe they actually gleaned more, and have a more circumspect appreciation for the shows than self-righteous crusading liberals, and starry-eyed progress-minded futurists seem to.
>>
>>71094916
> Star Trek does not neatly ramify either left wing or right wing ideas
this agrees with my op
>>
>>71094869
>To create that energy you need an anti-matter generator
In Star Trek as in reality, producing antimatter is a net consumer of energy. The Federation uses fusion for power generation, then uses some of that to produce antimatter for high-intensity applications like starships.
>>
>>71094869
>To create that energy you need an anti-matter generator, which is a rarity in the galaxy, available to only the top 1%, such as Starfleet.

Where is it stated that replicators are only available to Starfleet? Pretty sure Quark's got a couple. So does every set of quarters on DS9. They're apparently all over earth, too, if you believe Sisko's dad.

There are numerous mentions of industrial replicators over TNG and DS9's runs, implying they exist in common fabrication roles.

They even show up on loljor, the Holocaust world.

Burkean conservatism is based on the organic progress of societies. It's almost a Darwinian model for societal social and economic progress, which stood in contrast to the French ideological and dialectical model of progress, which was the forerunner of Hegel and Marx.

Star Trek is explicitly against dialectical materialism, and seems to respect the organic development of societies according to their biology, and geographical circumstances. I think Star Trek explicitly shows the unequal nature of different societies, and there is an implicit acceptance of these differences. In this sense, Star Trek is classically conservative if we are going by 18th century standards.

It however is very much against the moralization of natural hierarchy and difference as a tool for conquest, in which the strong are encouraged to dominate the weak. This notion exists at a point in the right wing spectrum, and represents an elements of extreme conservatism that Trek repudiates.

Of course it also repudiates the strident, conquest oriented ideas of the left, as well as the classical liberal notions of universalized progress, and divine mandate.
>>

>>
>>71094916
Not to mention, conservatism is just a KIND of liberalism. ALL of our politics come from the enlightenment. We've gotten rid of virtually all prior forms of thought about man and how society should function. In that sense I actually think the western left/right dichotomy is itself a cultural conceit, deceptive, and ultimately insufficient in its descriptive capacity.

It's very easy to show this to simply see how it begins to completely break down when you try to use it to analyze countries like Russia, India, China, or Japan.

That's not communism either, though. Communism involves the proletarian ownership of the means of production. A post-scarcity society needs no ownership of this automated capital, just the goods resulting from it. There are no more proletariat because nobody needs to work anymore. No more "class struggle", no more "exploitation", or any of the things commies cry about.

The nice part is the world is inevitably heading in this direction, and barring global catastrophe, it may very well happen within the next 50-100 years.
>>
>>71098022
You're forgetting that in Star Trek, humanity apparently has an average IQ equivalent to roughly a contemporary score of 115 with a very narrow bell curve, and has eliminated all mental pathologies. This is nowhere near happening, and will either take culling, and/or massive genetic engineering.
>>
>>71098261
Global average IQs of 115 are not necessary for economic automation, though they'd certainly help speed up the transition. As for genetic engineering, that isn't implausible either. Gattaca-style voluntary eugenics services practically sell themselves, because already it is a small minority who don't want to have a child guaranteed free of genetic defects and with a high intelligence, and that >muh god's image crowd might very well shrink in the future.
>>
>>71098560
>Global average IQs of 115 are not necessary for economic automation

Oh, no, of course not, but it is probably necessary for a humanity that can function socially in such a world. For the majority of humanity at this moment, such an existence would be disastrous, and invite all kinds of existential issues that would be expressed in criminality, civic chaos, social breakdown, and general hell.

There are many tasks that are too complex for automation. Others may be amenable to automation but it won't be economical for various reasons.

I don't think automation is going to increase much from this time out anon. If anything, it will decrease except in certain specific industries.

If you're talking about trade-related tasks, I agree that those are more difficult to automated than administrative or some service-related ones. Not because the algorithms are impossible to write, but because it requires a humanoid robot that doesn't suck. Once that problem is solved, the rest falls into place. Or are you saying we will never have decent robots either?
>>
>>71091096
Star Trek sucked. It was so fucking thoughtless.

Warp drive is impossible, so the whole premise of the whole goddamned series is false. They could have based it on deep time, Ark ships, and worm holes, but instead they stuck with the 1960s bullshit and the 1960s makeup.

Why the fuck would an alien look like a human? It's so dumb. I am so glad it's cancelled. I just wish they would stop making movies of it.
>>
>>71091096
The only reason the Federation is able to exist in the state that it does is because of replicators.

Replicators make capital useless, and physical objects are at the touch of your fingers. As long as you have an energy source (and that is plentiful), you have unlimited manufacturing capabilities.
>>
>>71105705
Yep, we'll never have decent robots. Never.

Nor will we have robots that can handle complicated field tasks like evaluating the cattle, or managing the employees, or driving the trucks because automated driving sucks ass and will fail horribly and be banned some day soon.

Nitpicking: its called post-scarcity economics , not post scarcity-economics. As in, its the economic system after scarcity economics, not the economic system after scarcity no longer exists. ie the economy is not based off scarcity, this does not mean scarcity does not exist.

Starfleet EASILY fits the bill for post-scarcity economics.

Literally unlimited bullshit for everyone is post scarcity economics, but

>Post-scarcity is not generally taken to mean that scarcity has been eliminated for all consumer goods and services, instead it is often taken to mean that all people can easily have their basic survival needs met along with some significant proportion of their desires for goods and services,[3] with writers on the topic often emphasizing that certain commodities are likely to remain scarce in a post-scarcity society

I thought the general idea was that the guy who wanted to take him apart had a really flimsy understanding of exactly what he was trying to do technically, and probably would have failed to properly figure out how to make more androids.

Shit, even with the superior knowledge about himself that he had, Data failed to make a properly working android too.

> Turned the borg against humanity

Wasn't that Q's fault for forcing the enterprise to confront them in the first place?

And regardless, it probably did them a lot of good to find out about the borg at that time instead of just having them roll through one day when no one knows jack shit about them.

There was that dumb episode where Picard went full retard and disclosed the Federations secret cloaking device and phase technology that could let starships fly through solid matter.

It's ok for Romulans and Klingons to have cloaking technology. But hol up we signed a treaty 70 years ago that says we cant have it. Better spill the beans on our secret weapons project.

Surprised Picard didn't get booted out of Starfleet for that, or had an untimely accident... Woops he got transported into the sun.

Earth in Star Trek was the product of a more evolved humanity and it's form of government could never exist in these times.

You might call it liberal but look at the extreme lack of degenerates, also not one fucking hint of Islam. Blacks in it have finally abandoned their victim complex and are no longer thugin and buging. Women have the freedom to work but they're not shaving their heads and trying to be a manly as possible.

If anything represents modern liberalism in the universe it's the borg: genderless, cultureless, and of one mind; and they're one of the rare species viewed as pure evil.

I wish our earth was more like the one in Star Trek but a lot of people are holding us back. It's not western conservatives that are the problem, it's everyone else.

Starfleet is a military organization.
Life outside Starfleet is not talked about much.
There is never a mentioning of property on earth, owning land.
For example how is Picard's family distributing their self grown wine?

There were a lot of humans not satisfied on living on earth, instead settling in new frontiers.

Basically everyone working outside Starfleet is looked down upon by them in the series.
Military has different rules than society.

It also still looks like a lot of people actually wanting to work trade in latinum.
Only the lazy hedonistic people live on earth, everyone else basically is in Starfleet or working for other organisations for latinum or starting businesses on other planets, also dealing in platinum.

TOS mentioned federation credits. DS9 you have the space jews trade in gold-pressed latinum. Considering that Quark likely wouldn't take a federation IOU as a payment for drink we can assume that DS9 staff used some kind of currency as well (most likely latinum).

We can instead argue that money wasn't central to most people's lives, but that doesn't hold true for all. There still were the filthy rich, and people doing dangerous jobs. Though it is more likely they instead used latinum for currency.

http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Federation_credit
http://memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Money

So whereas Roddenberry wanted some weird money-less society the idea was violated while he was around, and outright ditched by DS9.

Money wasn't really explored much in Voyager since they are stranded in the Delta quadrant where federation or ferengi currency would be worthless. They did however trade technology for things they needed, which came to bite them in the ass on a few occasions.

What show did you watch Hans?
>Starfleet is a military organization.
Yes, but the Federation that it serves is not.
Starfleet officers in general view serving in Starfleet as an honor. Its a giant circle jerk comprised of the best of the federation, but that doesn't mean they look down on anyone else.
Starfleet, though they claim to be an exploratory force, exists basically to secure the Federation and its population of fat and happy citizens.
Also remember TNG was highly idealistic...they assumed people will still want to run vineyards and restaurants because they have a passion for it.
We really can't even imagine what a technology like replicators would have on our society.

>It also still looks like a lot of people actually wanting to work trade in latinum.
Latinum isn't a Federation currency, as the Federation has no currency. The rest of the galaxy presumably does not have the resources/energy to operate solely off replicators.
Plus space jews and space gold...
>>

>>
>>71122793
But it is not true. Watch DS9.
There are humans dealing in latinum, settling other planets, working as mercaneries for others. Paid of course.
Also the federation buys goods with latinum and trades goods.

Bajorans were right in the middle of entering the federation. We all know the main missing of Picard was to secure pure races around the galaxy. There might have been bastard children as that of Worf and they weren't really the main focus or successful races, too weak the boy was. Troi and Spock were impure to help human cause, since this way it was easier for them to help to purify humans and other races of universe. There have to be sacrifices, but that doesn't means Picard wanted anything else than pure races & their unique cultures all over universe.

remember the episode where picard died because of his artificial heart and Q offered him the chance to change that?
