Americans, not for nothing but that's a lot of fucking money you owe right here... 20 Trillion? How are you going to repay this? Are you making repayment plans right now?
America is fucked. The bubble won't burst, there will be a fucking explosion
>>71081347
the goodest goys in America just finished paying off the Reagan loans last year.
They will never be able to repay the (((greatest ally))) these sums of money.
>he thinks country debt is like your personal debt
>>71081554
>he thinks you can keep on racking up debt and run trade deficits forever
>>71081347
Japan is at 230% of GDP and we're only at 104%
still got a good bit to go before we implode
The world is forced to use the dollar for all oil trade, as long as oil is needed we can just keep printing
>>71081618
You can, as long as you keep paying your interests nobody cares.
Most of the debt is American agencies writing IOUs to each other, you know
>>71081493
It will affect the entire world
>>71081772
It's kinda hard to service interest payments when your debt is following exponential increase trajectory...
>>71082011
If the GDP keeps rising along with it, not really.
>>71081347
it's money we owe to ourselves
>>71082011
I really can't wait to see Canadian debt after Trudeau's out of office and all of his pipe-dream liberal ideas are in full force.
>>71081347
Understand that the US dollar will NEVER collapse as long as it remains the primary currency of trade. America could owe ten times that much and the rest of the world would just be forced to play along because if the USD collapses it's armageddon for everyone. This is why China, Russia, and others are inking deals to skip the dollar for some trade directly between them. The IMF has been trying for years to popularize SDRs (Special Drawing Rights - sort of a "universal currency") instead of the dollar. But until these options gain significant popularity, the US is free to dig itself whatever size hole it wants to.
>>71082084
GDP is stagnant.
>>71081772
It depends more on foreign countries willingness to take in US treasuries and dollars. As it currently stands, The EU refuses to hold excessive sums of foreign currencies or debt from the government side. Obviously many EU corporations have dollar reserves but gold and Euros are the main reserves of your central banks.
>>71081347
We're not going to repay it. Ever. The amount of debt in our system must continually increase, else our monetary system collapses. If the private sector won't take on more debt, the government will. Much like politicians debating a balanced budget, the statutory debt ceiling is nothing more than kabuki theater.
>>71081721
This.
/pol generally doesn't seem very aware of the petro-dollar system.
They'd rather imagine DA JOOZ being behind everything, while the US is running the biggest scam of all time.
I don't understand it desu. I get that increasing demand on the dollar allows printing with less inflation.. but I don't get the dollar "recycling" part...
>>71082110
>taking out student loans
You deserve to flip burgers if you can't apply for a scholarship
come and take it
>>71081709
That's with mark to unicorn accounting. It doesn't account for unfunded liabilities like social security. The US's debt to GDP ratio is a lot more than 104%. If interest rates normalized, interest payments on the debt would swamp the federal budget in a few years, tops.
>>71081721
So if the price of oil collapsed that means american influence on the global stage collapsed too?
>>71082519
the wont need too youll eventually run out of money to fund the army
We won't have to. We have the strongest army on earth.
You Canadienne imbecile.
>>71082519
>>71082675
You think bailing the check is that simple? You'd be in deep shit if you did that, not because your creditors want their money, but because people would stop lending you money as you proved yourself to be unreliable.
>>71081347
America was only 10 years away. All they had to do was elect Al Gore.
>>71082578
No. We're not a petro state like cucknadia.
>>71082675
The world's current financial system is a creation of the US, and it would collapse without them. They would want to protect it at all cost. This is how they maintain their hegemony.
>>71081347
It's very easy to repay, simply print 20 trillion dollars.
>>71082578
In a round about way, it could lead to that, but not for the reasons that you're thinking. A lot of players in the energy sector sold junk bonds to finance their operations when oil was $80-$100/bbl. That's debt. Think they're going to pay it off with oil at $40/bbl? No. Energy companies are already filing for chapter 11, or stating that they won't make scheduled payments.
The fear here is that it could spread from the energy sector of the junk bond market to the broader junk bond market. If it does that, there is a chance that it will spread to the investment grade credit markets, which include things like US Treasury securities. That would drive yields up, which is the same thing as raising interest rates. If interest rates go up, we will have a choice: Deflationary collapse of our monetary system or fire up the nuclear powered printing presses and try to inflate our way out of it.
>>71081347
Those are sold bonds, not loans you dumbfuck. The repayment plan is paying the coupon rate each month until the maturity date.
>>71082675
That army depends on our ability to import oil, which would go away if we defaulted.
>>71082927
Doesn't compare. Canada just wants profits for its oil. The US barely even cares who gets paid as long as the payments are in USD. It wants to control the world's primary currency (and it does since the end of WW2).
>implying anyone can make us pay
>>71082811
>>71082620
>needing other countries to lend you money
kek
>>71081347
We're probably just gonna soft default in 10 years and the USD will lose like 75% of its value overnight. That's how we repay it.
>>71082820
You're Canadian, so you can be forgiven for not remembering that was a Newt Gingrich budget that brought all those surpluses. And also the 2000 dot-com bubble recession that George W brought us out of in record time by doing nearly nothing at all.
>>71081347
As if debt really exists for the nation that prints the petrodollar.
why do people think US debt is particularly high?
U.S debt is only a way to make other countries feel like they matter to us. It is a gesture of inclusion and friendship.
>>71083335
>being this fucking retarded
You're a right wing American so you're obviously mentally handicapped but I would remind you that
1. Newt was kicked to curb by the GOP in 1998. He had nothing to do with the budget surplus. He was far more interested in spending $100 MILLION in taxpayer dollars to investigate Clinton's penis and impeaching one of the greatest Presidents in American history.
2. Bush had a GOP Congress until 2007. How many balanced budgets did they have? 0. Republicans have no clue how to balance budgets. They are tax cut and spend.
3. It was the 1993 Omnibus budget that paved the way to a balanced budget.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omnibus_Budget_Reconciliation_Act_of_1993
But since you're a right wing retard you wouldn't know that.

Oh one more thing. there was no dot com recession. There was a 9/11 recession because George Bush kept us safe.
You're welcome for the education, you fucking moron.
>>71083500
Do you have a link for that chart? It's pretty interesting.
Well compiled.
>>71082811
Yep.
Our lenders know that it would create a world ending nuclear apocalyptic event.
>>71083783
So sorry you've been fed such propaganda by the CBC and their neurotic hatred for all things American, but your little chart there proves my point.
Also, everyone agrees that George W spent way too much, The difference is only that actual conservatives said so at the time while liberals demanded that he spend even more, then blamed him for massive deficits when it was all over.

>How are you going to repay this?
Spoiler: We're not. Literally the entire point of national debt is to never pay it back. So long as you can afford the interest payments it works out just fine for everyone involved.
>>71081347
That's the beauty of fiat currency.
>obama sees the deficit remain and even rise
>BEST PRESIDENT EVER LOL
but no, it's just numbers
government debt is probably the fakest debt on earth, which is why it's so huge
