there are other effective methods to this, though realistically you're unlikely to even need it. Most animals in the south will prefer to stay away from humans rather than confront them. But if you have the extra money and wan some extra assurance, pick up a black powder revolver. You don't have to be a citizen, do a background check, etc since they aren't firearms. Something like this should do fine.
