In hindsight I see how much of his success was built off shock value but when I was 12 and socially isolated his music did really resonate with me. The thing was once word got out I was into his music, High School being what it is, meant that I got more socially isolated but I didn't care because I still had the music.
I don't listen to it much now but dug out his greatest hits again just the other day and while I found his cover of tainted love now makes me want to tear my ears off many of his big songs 'disposable teens', 'fight song', 'the nobodies' are still very powerful songs. He is also quite technically impressive in terms of what he can do with his voice.

Manson seems to really only have one distinct character but it has evolved over time. What's happening is that you're only aware of artists who are dependent on marketing because the only ones you're exposed to are those that are marketed well. Meanwhile there's an immense population of artists occupying an emergent middle class of sorts in music - moderately popular, moderately successful, well known mainly among people with interest in that area of music.
