It's actually not required for a candidate to release their tax returns. It is an act of good faith to establish trust and transparency with the people. Sometimes, there may be sound excuses for not releasing them, such as an on going audit. But if there are no barriers, there is nothing to lose by releasing them as soon as possible.
Bernie would be doing himself a huge favor by releasing them. The longer he waits, the bigger the speculation gets.
