They're making as much as possible to leave to their kids, they know they fucked up.
There are many reasons. Some can't afford to. Some enjoy their work. Some feel pressured to continue their work because they literally cannot conceive of doing anything else with their lives.
People are really complicated. It's generally thought that people need to work to be happy. It is also generally thought that within a short time of retiring, an old person will die from the inactivity of their new lifestyle. But there are dozens or hundreds of individual reasons for why a person would continue to work.

A lot of them are flat out broke, there are 60+ year olds still paying on student loans. They fell for the retraining meme when the factories shuttered and such.

My grandma is rich as fuck and works because she wants something to do. Kids today would just sleep and watch anime when they're bored.

Stupid fuckers. That's what they get for having kids. I'm 52 and I have almost $2 million in investments. Half of that is post-tax. And the house is paid off.

It should be noted that many of them are in situations where they have to work because they put themselves into that situation in the first place. By their own choices. Speaking as a person who has some bad habits, people tend to waste a lot of money on stupid frivolous shit. Alcohol, gambling, drugs of various kinds, JEWelry, soft drinks or addictive snacks. Most people don't do all those things, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone who doesn't do at least two. It all adds up. People are terribly bad at saving money.
