This happened to a friend of mine, and now he works strip mining. He makes an insane amount of money with zero formal education (I forget the exact amount but it's above $150,000/year + expenses are paid). However, he also has a whole bunch of "tickets" in various industries that were paid for by the company when he was working in oil. This is also a guy who is quite intelligent and worked 12-18 hour days constantly during winter for years.
But yes, everyone else I know from the same industry is unemployed now, so I wouldn't really rely on that as a viable option.
