The entire Old Testament exists as a context for the New. Our religion wouldn't exist if there hadn't been a desire to move away from the violence and rigorous religious laws of the Old Testament. There is a good point here which is you need to make him understand the context of the Qur'an. Islam is a continuation on from Christianity, and even believes that Jesus was a prophet(though not Gods son), but that the Catholics bastardized the texts. The Qur'an is one whole book. Additionally, the nice parts of the Qur'an are in the beginning, whereas the violent warfare parts are towards the end, whereas with the Bible, its the polar opposite.
