It's not that unlikely.
1. Automated vehicles could put 10 million Americans out of work in as little as 10 years, depending how how quickly laws change to allow autonomous vehicles. It'll take longer for them to filter into the broader economy, but truckers and cabbies will find themselves quickly replaced.
2. Online shopping is expected to take up more than a THIRD of all shopping by 2022, which will put a LOT of storefronts out of business. E-commerce is highly automated already and Amazon is working on fully automating their warehouses and deploying drones to replace their delivery services.
3. Minimum wage hikes will drive demand for automation and investment in the development of autonomous technologies. Even as automated online shopping takes over retail, automated service kiosks will take over the service industry.
Then there's the more speculative technologies that we can't even predict the effects of yet. Advanced AI like IBM's Watson have already demonstrated that we can start replacing humans for Q&A purposes. Once they become commercially available to the public, a huge part of the service industry will simply disappear. Why call customer service if Watson can tell you whats wrong? Why go to a doctor if Watson can diagnose you? Why hire a technician if Watson can troubleshoot for you? Why hire a tutor if Watson can answer all of your study questions? Why hire a lawyer if Watson can sift through case data faster than any human?
In 20 years, I wouldn't be surprised if roughly half of the US labor force was made obsolete. There will still be work to do, but the nature of that work is going to change drastically and chaotically. This is, basically, the industrial revolution all over again.
Go look up the labor conflicts and revolutions that happened during that period, and you might get an idea of what we're in for with automation.

Well, no, it won't. Once unemployment reaches a critical point, economic growth will decline and technological advancement will grind to a halt. Deflationary forces will kick in, inventories will climb, revenues will drop, and the economy will buckle without addition growth to keep the system going.
Imagine this: automation replaces truckers.
1. Truck stops lose their biggest source of income. The storefronts close without any truckers to use the diner or even need to use a bathroom, and they convert to simple automated fueling stations for the automated truck fleets.
2. Motels lose their largest clientele base. Without the ability to fill their rooms anymore, they will suffer from excess capacity will have to cut room prices just to get people in the door. If they can even find customers, they'll still have to cut their workforce.
3. Truckers, themselves, are shuffled around the transportation industry. Many become delivery drivers that can't be automated away (yet), because they have to deliver pallets or packages. Many more will leave the industry entirely. All of them take pay cuts.
Those three things, alone, will destroy most flyover states as a new "rust belt" starts to form in Iowa and Kansas and Nebraska. Small towns that survived solely off of business from truckers and secondary business from the trucker service industry start to die. Mass migration ensues as people move to bigger cities to find work. This leads to contagion and the entire economy implodes.
There will be a "recovery", a lot like the recovery we have now, and then another industry will be automated and the economy will implode again. Over and over, until we reach a critical turning point and society can no longer hold itself together. That's when the apocalyptic shit happens: WWIII, revolution, civil war, who even fucking knows?
Rather than a technological singularity that makes humans obsolete, humans will have a technological collapse that makes automation impossible.

Poland, Turkey, and Japan will be the main power players in the 21st century, not China, India, and Brazil as is commonly believed (they have too many internal problems). Mexico will be a major power by the end of the century, largely through demographic conquest of the American South. The U.S. will remain the only global superpower doe the foreseeable future, because its technological head start, vast resources, and natural borders are too difficult for other nations to seriously contend with. Russia and Islam will continue to be a problem for about 20 years, then slowly phase out as they're brought under control by Poland and Turkey, respectively.
