In elementary school, I got beaten and called the awfullest Serbian swear words. Tough times, I snapped a few times.
Once, during P.E., a guy stomped my head while we did rolls. Despite suffering a bad injury, I tackled him to the ground and chocked him so hard he had bruises for weeks.
Next his buddies wanted revenge and I broke their leader's nose with two headbutts.
Then the leader's older sister started to slander me every step. I smacked her across the face so hard, I broke her lip in three spots.
Nobody touched me in elementary school ever again or said a damn word about me.

Probably what it best taught me is that some people are just shitty for no reason and you need to defend yourself against them because you can't trust the authority to do it or for them to hold themselves to any sense of fairness.
But also it's not the same as life outside of high school because you aren't forced to be in the same place as them each and every day. And you can defend yourself against them, the trayvon cases of the world are actually quite rare compared to lawful use of arms in self defense.
