Everything sucked in the 1970's. Nixon embarrassed the nation and Carter ended up being a disaster. Jobs were scarce, you had to wait in lines for hours to get gasoline in some places and crime in places like DC was completely out of control. People felt like it was the end and that things would never as good as they had been in their own childhood. Whether it has much to do with Ronnie or not, he had a good 8 year run that saw a lot of these problems alleviated.

(People went around with "W.I.N." buttons: Whip Inflation Now!") On top of that, there was the whole Iran hostage clusterfuck.
Reagen got elected, and he, along with Volker went down a monetary policy path that did bring inflation to heel, but keep in mind that Volker set the interest rates at something like 17%.
As you probably know, Reagan hated the USSR. His basic policy was that our economy was more capable, so we would outspend them in an effort to get them to go broke. Unknown to most, as a result of this, the federal debt increased by 284% under his 8 years as president, but outspend the USSR we did. (FYI, that means that he added more to the US debt than all other presidents before him combined, but that is a feature of our monetary system. The US debt doubles, on average, every 8 years. If it doesn't, shit breaks.) We had programs that were unnecessary, but we figured that we could afford them, the USSR would not know that they were unnecessary and would spend a fortune trying to keep up. A lot of our EMP research was this way. While the USSR was going to fail anyway, it worked, and it probably failed sooner than it would have otherwise.
It was also under Reagan that the so called Moral Majority came to be. That pissed a lot of people off.
