My dad later went back right before the fall of communism. It was the only time I heard him speak so passionately about the horrors of having to buy rationed food on a coupon system and how bad the country had declined, after living in America for 10+ years.

some problems with communism:
Every important person, police, fire, doctors, dentists end up being incredibly undervalued, so if you want them to actually help you, you need to bribe them. Under communism, you need to bribe every single person in a bureaucratic position because their salary is too low for them to actually care to do their job properly.
You end up having serious social stratification, where some people will simply get terrible treatment and get abandoned by society, because they have no way of providing the bribes to keep themselves healthy and working.
Food shortages is another problem, mostly because some people will always hoard food for a rainy day and then someone else goes without.
