they pay that out of their profits, profits would adjust as inflation adjusts. only in the case of shrinking profits would CEO pay drop, even then it would take a lot of shrinkage
if you want to blame someone for CEO pay, blame the SEC for requiring companies in the 90s to publicize CEO pay
that's what caused the massive increases. fuller information means greater competition and a few million to get a good CEO is pennies for a multinational corporation

Right, but it'll take time for inflation to equalize, the economy will be in a state of chaos as they try to re-price, competitiveness will force them to continue trying to keep it as low as possible, and profit margins narrow.

CEO's effective spending power drops as soon as prices start to rise. It'll take time for them to figure out the inflation rate and raise his pay accordingly, and by that time the profit margins will be much lower.

Happiness is a temporary state of the human mind. It needs to seek out ever new experiences as the current ones become stale and uninteresting, and the person is liable to slip into depression.

They may be very happy with $15 an hour when it comes in. But even if inflation didn't exist, a year from then, six months from then, they'll want more, and they'll be unhappy with $15 an hour.

It's the reason Communism failed. Basic human nature.
>>
>>70986973
Because they don't have the skills/experience to work for more. If your value is less than the minimum wage you won't get work.

I wonder if this is an argument for the basic wage recently introduced by Finland. If the state provides a minimum then the minimum wage becomes pointless and can be abolished. This would allow people who would otherwise be unemployable due to the minimum wage to take on very low paid work.

Just a thought.

It's a tool of the corrupt unions using the poor and stagnant wages as a bargaining chip.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2016/apr/12/los-angeles-15-dollar-minimum-wage-unions?utm_source=jolt&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Jolt04142016&utm_term=Jolt

See, unions in Los Angeles spend years fighting for $15 an hour and get it and now they want to be exempt because the entire thing is a bargaining chip they can now use. Either stay out of the union and get $15 an hour but no benefits or join the union and make less but get benefits. It's a scam perpetrated by the "defenders of labor" to try and strong arm people into joining unions which means more money for union heads thanks to having to pay dues and probably negotiating better deals for themselves (but not the actual employees) from companies as well.

In conclusion, unions need to die and be rebuilt from the ground up.

He's right. Artificially increasing wages inevitably causes an artificial increase in inflation... usually one which ends up exceeding whatever short term gains you get from the wage increase.

Ex.
In 1950 the minimum wage was $0.75 an hour
Average rent for a single apartment was about $45 a month
You needed to work about 60 hours to cover your rent for the month.

Today the minimum wage in most states is $7.50
Average rent for a single apartment is about $600 a month.
You need to work 80 hours to cover your rent for the month.

When you let the market set wages, they tend to more closely match inflation. When you impose artificial wage increases, it drives inflation.

I'm torn. I do support a raise in the minimum wage since most studies show it would stimulate demand in the economy so long as the rise is moderate and implemented slowly. I don't think the minimum wage should a 'living' wage however. The clue is in the title...MINIMAL. Anyone earning minimum wage should consider that their employer would pay them less if they could. Any job paying minimum wage is worth less than that level of pay in the competitive market place.

don't you guys realize that for the upcoming age of automation to come minimum wage must be raised? Companies now have no incentive to innovate with automation when they can hire cheap labor. If human labor was worth more by law companies would be forced to innovate with automation to cut their human labor cost
>>
>>70996237
Now that is an argument that sparks my interest. We're certainly going to require more robust public services.
>>
Do you guys not realize that the real issue are the wages themselves? People are getting paid for wasting most of their time, regardless of that time being spent doing something useful or not.

No I mean it. Everyone should consider the changes the economy is likely to undergo in the coming decades and whether our current institutions are up to the challenge of meeting those new challenges or whether we'll need a new way of doing things.

If you ask for $15 you get $12 or $11 for certain jobs.

If you ask for $11 your boss rapes your family to death in front of you and has you charged with the crime. You have to demand more than you can get. Signaling for anything less marks you as prey.

I don't get 15 either. As someone who worked Minimum wage, quite recently in
fact, I can see why it would be hard to live on that, even with no dependents. I
think somewhere around ten dollars is reasonable, but fifteen? That is a literal
100% increase. If the last place I worked for minimum wage had to meet that
they would be out of business, or at least have to increase the prices of their
products beyond the point of competition with their corporate competitors.

I suddenly understand. This is a jew ploy to destroy local business and get the
people completely dependent on the corporate teat for both employment and
consumerism. They are fine with paying you more if it all comes back to them
anyway.

It depends entirely on the area, which is why a federal increase is bizarre to me. If the federal minimum is $15 in Bumfuck, Montana, these minimum wage workers are probably going to be doing pretty fucking well for themselves, assuming the rest of the market doesn't inflate to match the increase.

But here in fucking San Diego, $15 would get you just skating by. Currently most people work a full time, and a part time job on the side to maintain with a little cushion spending in this area, if you're a minimum wage worker. So it's absolutely a good idea, which is why the fucking state already has passed a law to enable the state minimum to increase to $15. We live in a country where the cost of living varies wildly between states, and even within the states themselves. Let the states decide the appropriate amount they should offer, because North Carolina workers do not need to be paid the same as California workers, given they pay for most everything far less.

Liberals are stupid.

They don't know the definition of "inflation".

They also have to say 15 "bucks", because they are too stupid to identify money as a national currency.

That's kind of ironic coming from a german though.

This shows quite well that you aren't a teacher.
There is nothing wrong with Common Core in essence. You've just forgotten that there was a point where math wasn't completely intuitive to you.
Common Core is designed to teach math to children who barely have any idea of how to count, up to pre-algebra, and in such away that even the slowest motherfucker can get there. Teaching methods and tricks to kids that don't have the inclination to come up with their own, and never skipping steps that you and I make mentally, with a language that doesn't intimidate the faint of heart. It does its job admirably.

The problem arises from lazy teachers that just want to tick off what's on the answer card, and can't/won't provide stimulus for, or worse, can't keep up with the kids that do actually understand math. They just end up trying to teach the lowest common denominator, abandoning and punishing the gifted.

Throwing Common Core's methods into the trashbin would just leave you frustrated with no way of handling the slow students.

Instead of raising the minimum wage...
Why don't the people who can't afford to live off the current minimum wage move to cheaper areas?
