Because the internet has to be made "safe" for a bunch of narcissistic individuals who insists on revealing their identity on the internet. It's also in the interests of companies who want to be able to collect big data and track you.
Early internet was a place for pioneers and producers who could actually push the frontier of the medium. Social value was derived from what you produced and not from the identities you had. That era is gone.
