Hello

I was wondering if anyone here could give me a good explanation as to how the economy is supposed to function under communism and/or socialism.

I do not mean to ask how it has worked in the past or currently, although that may be useful as an example. but how it is designed to function.

I find it hard to wrap my mind around how the government is involved with the economy in a way that is beneficial to the populace.

I have always viewed capitalism as almost a force of nature. nobody is really controlling anything, it just works itself out through supply and demand.

so a government trying to control the economy to some great extent to me seems almost as futile as them passing a law that declares gravity to be illegal. it simply would end in disaster.

but I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

thank you.

Mediocrity and slow but sure decline in economic power as complacency runs its course.

The only way to run this type of society is to be in some type of war constantly. See: 1984.

It doesn't. And that's the problem with it.

It can only work within a small and homogeneous white country.
>>
Are you asking how it worked or how it should work?
Socialism and communism are not same things.

This. It has never worked and never will.

Only a small country can run this type of economy. Not a country as big as the US.

basically in communism you work, the government makes the profit, and then redistributes it. This includes everything, from food production, to land land owner ship and so on.

In socialism, which usually works as a transition from capitalism to communism, you work, and then the government takes the profit and redistributes it. You still can own items, however most things are taxed and redistributed.

These systems usually look over the fact that there is really no incentive to work hard, so in reality, nothing happens. In addition, governments are hard to manage, and corruption is strife when the government has so much wealth and such a high responsibility.

That's why it always ends up in mass murdering, to downsize the population into manageable numbers.

Socialism, communism and capitalism are property theories. They answer one -- and only one -- question: who should control capital?

Capitalism says individuals should control capital, because individuals are not subject to group-think, are freer to act, and are more responsive to the needs of the markets.

Socialism says groups should control capital, because group-think is more advantageous. The group is often government, but necessarily so....the group could be unions, cartels, monopolies or associations.

Communism says the people as a whole should control capital.

When robots can do every manual labour task and the working man has little or no value communism will return.

When the consumer has no competative advantage and the items they want are worth nothing work and profit will have no meaning.

i dont know in the theory. But being a brazilian in a leftist oriented economy thats how it works :
the state will tax everything. Everyone will dream about being a public worker instead of an entrepreneur. In the end the only private sector companies will need to play the government game to function. And in the end its basicly pay bribes. No one cant do anything without paying high taxes and paying bribes. The state is inflated, and as we know it cant produce value, since its never investing in a meaning of production in the future, like being attractive to the international capital. Its primary objectives is keeping the state full of money, giving the people some small money so they can vote for you in the next election and making sure the schools and universities are pro left and generating leftist material.

Depends heavily on what kind of system you're talking about. The Soviet Union was different from DPRK and Red China, which in turn were different from Yugoslavia, which was in turn different from Chile, which was different from Catalonia and the Paris Commune.
It's not necessarily the government controlling everything.

That's not true at all. The USSR and China actually experienced net growth in population and life expectancy most of the time. Only the Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia witnessed a net population drop, and that's because they were radically different from the Soviets and other regimes.

That's the beauty of communism. You don't have to work, but you will get paid anyway. Or forced to work, rebel and killed.
