Most of you do not know the history of Detroit, especially non-Americans.
In this thread I will walk you through how one of the greatest white cities in the world fell in less than 50 years
It all started in July of 1967, when the Blacks of Detroit started rioting on a scale unlike anything you can imagine.
Ferguson was in no comparison.
Much of the city was being overrun.
White areas formed militias within their communities to keep out the rioters, but many fled immediately. Over a 5 day period, most of the areas around downtown had been invaded, looted, and burned.
The national guard was called in to support the police, who were trying to move into areas that were burning.
Firemen were taking fire from rioters and eventually fire control operations were abandoned due to over 134 firemen being injured.

No person in their right mind would return, nor would anyone purchase the houses that were left. This caused a greater majority of homes in the Detroit area to be abandoned, and ultimately torn down or burned. Most business buildings are vacant. The majority don't have entrances sealed. This is one of the reasons that Detroit has such a large homeless problem, because on any road you can find a building you can sleep in for the night.

Recently, EMS and the fire department has had a problem with their vehicles being robbed at night.
Around town, you will find parking lots surrounded by barded wire. Inside, ambulances, fire trucks, other EMS vehicles.
They operate like small military outposts, usually having a guard and only opening the gate when a vehicle arrives or is leaving.
Detroit's infrastructure is steadily crumbling.
Instead of repairing bridges, they replace weight limit signs with increasingly smaller numbers.
Also in this picture, you can see a small shelter under this bridge spanning a freeway downtown. Almost all of these viaducts have people living under them.

The old train terminal area is pretty quite at the times you were photographing. Go wandering through the Packard Plant in daylight is normally fairly safe, save for when someone wants to bring in and chop cars. Eastern Market still doesn't have any issues. Too many mafioso around and they keep a tight leash. The damn google maps drivers actually hit the more dilapidated areas.
I'm still confused why the nig bogs rioted. Detroit used to be a great auto city, full of jobs and a competitive market. Even Obama addressed this way back, yet nothing's changed.

Went to the downtown core a few years back and went in some abandoned buildings, climbed stairs to the roof. It's truly bizarre and upsetting to see the inside of beautiful edifices rot into something out of a horror movie then make it to the top and look out on some sort of post apocalyptic wasteland. Very depressing considering it's only a few hours drive from Toronto.

These are some of the nicer areas. To some of the nerds who want to go exploring; it's mostly safe. Travel in packs and don't haul around a 500$ camera and most people won't fuck with you.
That being said the drug use and mental health issues mean everyone (even whites) are a real threat if they are approaching you. The thing to keep in mind is most of these folks know the cops aren't coming and no one will be helping you if they see...so be careful.
I used to go over more when the dollar was better for me but now I just stay on my side. There are lots of jobs in the area in advanced manufacturing (Cnc machining pays well and is abundant) but you quickly run out of places you'd feel comfortable living.
