I started reading this book and could not finish it.

That's your problem right there. You're taking book reviews from people who are ideological opposed to the source material. Maybe read it yourself.
It isn't far from a perfect book, but the premise has served me very well as a lens to view history: basically history is out of the hands of man, philosophy is contingent on context and there is no such thing as in inherently strong culture.
