Try to get yourself a copy of The Joy of Cooking from the 40s-late 50s. Shortening makes acceptable pie crust, even more so if you have only purchased pie in the past. Butter and milk pie crusts are better than shortening though and the best pie crusts are made with lard rendered from the fat around the kidneys.

In terms of lard what you do is go to the butcher and ask for the fat deposits that form around the kidneys of hogs. Any other fat from the hog will not be good for sweet things but it will be fine for savory things. After you have your fat throw it in a pot at low heat, if you are super lazy you can toss a little bit of water in to help with rendering and render the fat out. You can either eat or throw out the fat cracklings that form at the end.
