Because we've advanced our civilization to the point that gold is virtually useless, as there is no real application for that metal anymore besides some basic electricity conduction business, which is handled way more efficiently by other metals.
Gold was the top tier metal in the ancient ages because it was extremely soft and easy to shape, hence why it was used very extensively for coins and as a currency.
Don't fool yourself, Gold has no real value but a legacy one, the one banks and international funds put on it based on the old coin=bills rates.
Those who waste a fortune by buying gold "for the apocalypse is coming soon" are probably the most guillable and idiotic morons out there, as they will be pathetically laughed at by pretty much every single idiot with a pinch of salt in his brain if the current society collapses.
