Anyone else here related to any war heroes? The USS Donald Cook is named after my uncle. This is the same ship that the ruskies keep fucking around with their jets flying close.

> Why so hostile rusks? We should be bros...
>>
>>70939235
I'm a descendent of General Grant, but I can't grow a beard like him so why does it even matter?
>>
>>70939235
No. I come from a long line of cowards and underachievers.
>>
>>70939407

Funny you should say that, Grants grandparents house is in my hometown. I live a couple miles from it at most.
>>
My grandpa's bro was a high ranking General in the Romanian Army, recipient of the King's Cross and the German Iron Cross for his valuable actions during the liberation of Romania and later on the assault on Stalingrad.

As the tides of the war shifted and Romania changed factions, he was demoted and forced to fight under the Soviets, up until the liberation of Vienna.

After the war ended, he was sent to the Gulags in Siberia, from which he returned 5 years later. After he returned to Romania, he was imprisoned by the communist regime and he died in prison at the age of 89.

Damn, that man had it rough, only because he wanted to defend his country
>>
My grandfather fought with chinese on Damansky.
>>
>>70939235
I'm related to Gustav Vasa.
>>
>>70939407
Related to Grant through marriage
Nice to meet you whatever the heck kind of relative you're called
>>
>>70939618

Dan that's legit as fuck thanks for sharing Romania bro
>>
>>70939664

Please, elaborate
>>
>>70939807
I just know it because my grandma saw an article in the newspapers about a relative to Vasa buying some farm or something, and she knew that we were related to the person who bought the farm.
>>
>>70939766

No prob Ameribro.

He was the highest ranking officer from our family, on my mother's side. Fun fact: my grandpa had 8 brothers, and 6 of them fought in the war.

From those 6, 3 of them were legionaries (fascist ideology) and 3 of them were monarchists (supporting King Michael's throne). They would come together only during Christmas, as a favor for their mother. During the rest of the year, they would work against each other politically-wise and even by force.

Out of those 6, the 3 legionaries were executed. and the 3 monarchists all ended up in prison.

It shows you how two sides of a coin that want basicaly the same thing eventually end up being betrayed by their own people.

Pic related, my grandpa's bro in his official Royalist Uniform at his wedding
>>
I've got quite a lot of war 'heroes' in my family. None of them that anyone would have heard of. One of my great uncles was a Major with the Glorious Glosters at the Battle of the Imjin River and then was a POW in a Chinese ran camp he got a Distinguished Service Order for his efforts. Not a very pleasant time by the sounds of it. I'll post some more stories if anyone is interested
>>
>>70940505
go on bongbro
>>
>>70940171

That's savage bro. Allow me to tell the story of my uncle. Donald Cook spoke Vietnamese and was captured and taken prisoner. He was eavesdropping on his captors and even lied about his rank which means he was tortured and put to work more but he also had more of a say for his comrades, such as he could distribute meds and food to who needed it the most. He then escaped and he sent a letter to my aunt saying something along the lines of, "I'm alive but I have to go back" and so he got himself recaptured on purpose and repeated this process until he was finally KIA. He is the first infantry soldier to have a battleship named after him and there is even a statue of him in Burlington Vermont where my father is from. There is also an annual donald cook award in the Marines for bravery

This is the kinda dickwaving we both have to do from time to time to prove to each other that we still have dicks. Don't let it get to you, it doesn't mean anything aggressive. If anything it's the small retarded countries that are a threat because they don't have centuries-old tradition of military bantz, don't have much to lose, and don't have enough nukes to destroy earth. They tend to be reckless, while we always show restraint.

And besides fucking around with your jets is actually a friendly act. Back during soviet times we had crews permanently stationed in border regions whose job was to show up in the air regularly. They managed to strike friendship with their american counterparts to the point of sharing the stories about their kids and families and actually knew each other pretty well.

We also had this shtick where a Tu-95, Bear you call it, would suddenly pop up in the middle of bumfuck nowhere just cruising, waiting for american jets to scramble for escort. It was sort of a running gag: boom - a bear outta fucking nowhere.

Good times.
>>
>>70940729

24 actually. The age gap between my grandpa's oldest brother and him, being the youngest, was something like 30 years or even more.

That's why my grandpa and a brother of his never fought, they were too young to do that.

Take that and the fact that my grandpa had 6 kids, and my mom was the youngest of em all, and you get the weird age thing.

>>70940666
Dayum, that's sick. Reminds me of the Polish soldier that actively tried to get captured by the Germans so that he'll be sent into the camps and form a resistance.

Russia proved it has no nuts though. You're lucky we don't shoot down your planes like we should. You wouldn't do anything anyway, just like you ran with your tail between your legs when the Turks blasted you soviet rustbucket out of the skies. Russian army is garbage. You're lucky the U.S is nice.
>>
>>70940682
100% this. You can't poke the bear and not expect some sort of agitation
>>
>>70940954

Hey that's cool as fuck. I can't wait to explore Russia someday. Definitely one of my favorite countries. Wish we could be bros and just fuck with China all day. Hopefully trump gets elected so we can become allies finally instead of twiddling each other's ducks around lol

My great grandfather was a Sergeant in the London Scottish Regiment in WW1, he went over the top at the Somme and survived and then i think went on to get a commission in the Royal Artillery by the wars end. Maybe less heroic but still just as interesting was my other great grandfather, he fought in the Mesopotamia in WW1 and even as a quite old man took up arms once again to defend his country as an officer in the home guard, picture Captain Mainwaring from Dad's Army. I realise these aren't so much 'war heroes' as interesting stories but I don't think I can express how proud I am to be related to these people.

The cloak was only available for high ranking officers, and the recipients formed the Royal Kings Guard.

They also carried a sword, I'll check if i still have pictures of it - we still have it in family possession, that and the cloak and some medals.

>>70941495
Damn man, they are heroes of they survived World War I. You should be proud that their blood courses in your veins, those were the real men that sadly do not exist anymore.

Not a war hero but he definitely saved a lot of men's lives in Antartica. My relative helped save the men stuck in Antartica by constructing a boat with some other men to seek help. This was during the Imperial Trans-Antartica Expedition led by Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Also if you want a read on one of the biggest conventional battles post ww2, read about the battle of Imjin River, which as i mentioned my great uncle fought in.
I've got a few more stories and general family knowledge stuff plus a few pics and some trinkets.

My Grandfather during and after WW2. He was a Lieutenant-Commander and was chief engineer aboard various ships in the Atlantic, including one which was Torpedoed. After the war he was stationed in what was British Palestine, he was in a bank when a bomb went off and he got a shard of glass in the leg so he had to live in an army camp for the remainder of his time out there. He was also stationed in a camp in India for a time, not pleasant at all as he describes it. When he eventually left the navy in around 1960 he went on to become an engineer in a Cadburys chocolate factory and the commander of the local Sea Cadets. He's still alive and kicking at the ripe old age of 95.

My great grandfather was a US admiral at Pearl Harbor and later commander of Anzac naval forces under Macarthur.
Too bad he didn't get to command one of those task forces with 5 Essex carriers later in the war.

Direct descendant through uninterrupted male line, basically i have the last name.
He was the second in command of the northern army during our revolution, died in combat trying to buy time with a select few of his men during a retreat in an attack that was intended to be a hit and retreat from the go but that went bad when the spaniards were already deployed at the time of the attack. They still managed to incapacitate a shit ton or artillery which was the main objective.
However being 200 years separated in time i have nothing really to do with him anymore except a bit of pride when looking at the condecorations and other stuff that is in display in my father's house and the sabre in a museum.
