What did your ancestors do in WW2 /pol/?

I found out what each of my great grandfathers did.

One was an NCO in the Royal Engineers in Burma

One was an Intelligence officer in the 8th Army in Italy

One bombed Dresden

And the other was an Irish farmer who did nothing

My grandfather was in the core of engineers and fought in the pacific. My other grandfather joined the army slightly after ww2 and provided peacekeeping in Germany.

My grandfather didn't enlist (also there was no conscription in Australia in WW2 because we're part of the civilised world) because he wasn't a fucking idiot and actually helped the country more through high-income taxpaying than by getting himself killed by some roaches on a beach while a bunch of idiots he knew returned with limbs missing or came back retarded

Grandfather on my fathers side was an arial reconnaissance photographer. He flew in a B-24 Liberator. He took photos both in Europe and the Pacific.

On my moms side my grandfather flew a Mosquito fighter-bomber for the Canadian air force. He had to return home early though because both of his brothers were KIA in Europe (Operation Market Garden). Via the Saving Private Ryan rule.

My great uncle was in the naval Air Force. The kind that flew from carriers. Had to bail out once. Other great uncle survived the Petworth Bombing because he was out buying the headmaster cigarettes. Great grandfather in the mechanical corps (got his cap badge on my desk), another in the firefighters for Portsmouth.

That's all I know. I have lots of family in the military. Haven't really looked back at it much.

Maternal grandfather: wounded when Rommel almost btfo of americans at Kasserine Pass; returned later for occupation of germany.

on my father side, my grandpa was a child, didn't go, but his elder brothers went, and died somewhere in belarus. Pic related, his comrade of arms who last saw him, pretty popular among elders in my country.
>>
My grandfather was in the Hungarian SS fighting in the russian front, was captured and spent about 3 years in a POW camp, building railroad tracks somewhere in central Russia. Managed to escape somehow.

My GGrandfather was captured by the Japs in Burma and was a POW, but he didn't hold any prejudice against japs or their cars because he wasn't a fucking racist bigot like yours.

My Grandpa had one of the most dangerous if not the most dangerous jobs you possibly could have.
He was a belly gunner for the U.S Air Force.
I can only imagine the adrenaline rush you would get from dog fighting like that.
After researching the mortality rate of this job it's a miracle I am even here today.

My grandfather was a bomber gunner for The RAF. Was shot down near the Belgium boarder and spent 3 years in a POW camp, escaping once but was turned in by a French farmer who gave him +2 other prisoners shelter for a night. Was moved to a POW camp in eastern Germany after being recaptured. After the bombig of Dresden all RAF memebers had their hands tied or cuffed for a year. Once the war was over he endured a death march west with other POW's to avoid being liberated by the communists.

At least we would be white

Hitler viewed Anglos as Aryans and wanted an allegiance with Britain
>>
>>70933388
on my Grandmothers side her brother fought at the battle of Britain, on my Grandpas side he was too young but he came from a family of 15 poor Londoners, and he is the only male left, I don't know how any of them died but according to him it was mainly because of the war, the only one of his brother I know is a guy everyone in the family called uncle Ben, who got pretty badly fucked up in the war and died before I was born, on my mothers side I haven't got a clue, but my Grandpa fought in South Africa, I'm guessing it was because of the partied, they left south Africa because the military wanted to conscript my mother 4 brothers, I'm the last male in my family tree so all the pressure is on me now to have a son or more
>>
Two great-grandparents shot Commies out on the Karelian Isthmus.
>>
>>70935245
Seriously believe that? If Hitler wanted allegiance with Britain he wouldn't have attacked Britain's allies. Britain would be less degenerate with Nazis, it's true, but it would also be a satellite state for Germany and you would not be able to express politically incorrect opinions.
>>
Grandfather was on a transport for the invasion of Japan, casualty estimates were expected around 90% for early waves. Two cities glassed, japs surrender, invasion called off.
Owe my existence to most destructive weapons on the planet.
>>
>>70934932
Our countries won't be much different 20 - 30 years from now either under EU dictatorship or the Islamic caliphate.
>>
>>70935462

Plenty more japs owe their lack of existance to those same weapons
>>
My grandfather was an artillery sergeant. Told me stories of how they would get the fuse timing right and rain shrapnel down on the Germans. He fought in D Day and had a scar where his tank blew up and a piece sliced his arm.
>>
>>70933388
Great uncle stormed the beaches of Normandy as a medic. Cousin's grandfather bombed Germans until his plane went down and he was a POW for 2 years. My grandfather was a spook for the CIA after the war starting in 1953. He was too young to join up during ww2 though.
>>

Except 'radical' European political parties are growing stronger every year

>Islamic caliphate
Purely a meme. Muslims have no chance of taking over a single European country, even if there were twice as many 'refugees' allowed in
>>
>>70933388

Mine did almost nothing, since WW1 wiped out most of the family.

1 grandfather who was a Desert Rat, fought Rommels Afrika Korp.
1 grandfather RAF ground crew/engineer.
...before then...
In WW1, 1 dead in 2nd battle of Ypres (gas shell at sanctuary wood), 1 dead near Cologne (Royal Air Corps, Vickers Vimy crash, funeral attended by Gamelin), 1 in 3rd Afghan War (one of 11 British officers commanding the indian army under Bonham Carter).

I am the last of my line.
>>
Paternal grandfather tried to enlist but they needed him at home because of his job
His half brother was KIA in the Pacific
Don't know anything about the others. My maternal grandfather was too young for WW2 but was in the merchant navy.

Invasion would have killed multimillon Japanese as well. Russians were poised to invade from the northwest, imagine that shit show. The few hundred thousand that died were a good bargain for all involved.

>Seriously believe that? If Hitler wanted allegiance with Britain he wouldn't have attacked Britain's allies.

Are you retarded or something? Do you know anything about what happened in WW2?

Britain rejected any peace offer and there were several made by germany, usually including "we pay for all damages done and go back to our own borders". The first was issued even on Sept. 2nd, 1 day after the war started and 1 day before britain declared war on germany. Even at the end close before Hitler killed himself he hoped for an alliance with britain against the soviets. The only reason Germany went over to London and bombed it directly was because the brits started doing the same in Germany for 5 month already, 2 days after Churchill was elected.

One Grandfather fought in the British Army. He ended up in a situation where it was just him and a German, and he could kill he German if he wanted to, or let him go, because he wasn't a threat. He let the guy go.

A great-grandfather from a different part of the family did something away from the front line. We aren't too sure what it was but we thnk it was driving trucks or something like that. Nothing fancy, but something helping the war effort nonetheless.

Not too sure about the rest of the family.

My great grandfather was in a tank unit in Germany, it got blown up and he was the only survivor. They were taking metal out of him until he passed. My other great grandfather and grandmother escaped through nazi occupied Europe, they went from Poland to Norway to England to the US. And then my family that stayed in Germany and did not immigrate to the US with the other half were Nazis but luckily were not killed.
>>
>>70936012

If we'd joined up with German units in 1945 to crush the commies it would have been amazing, unfortunately the allied propaganda machine made us believe the soviets were our allies and Germans our enemies so public support for extending the war would be out of the question, even though those at the top knew the communists would become our worst enemy after the war.

On my German side. One was Luftwaffe Pilot of a Henkel Bomber. Was shot down and given an honourable discharge and lived his life at his farm till the war ended. The other was part of the German Army. He was stationed under Mansteins 11th Army in the Crimea and his unit floated around Army Grouo South the whole war. One of my great grandfathers fought for Germony in WW1 and we have his diaries which mention the "Christmas Truce". Another family member of mine worked for Leica developing scopes for bomb sites and snipers. He later went on to get contracted by NASA to help developed the camera lense that took the picture of Lance Armstrong on the moon.
>>
Grandfather was a SS officer in the Independent State Of Croatia, left his rank and then joined Tito's partisans in the uprising against the fascists.

Then immigrated to Britain after the war.
Banged a German woman and created my family.
>>
>>70935608

>>

He was never caught by the British authorities for being involved with the Axis
>>
Grandfather was in the Imperial Japanese Navy, got badly fucked up in 1944, other Grandfather was in the Marines and got badly fucked up invading Luzon. Showed up in time to occupy Japan and marry my grandmother, other grandfather never married.
>>
>>70936127

Ask him while he is still around, write it all down, their lives will be more interesting than you imagine, but capture as much of it as possible.
>>
Both great grandfathers fought in the battle of the bulge in US army infantry. Both were captured but survived. One of my great uncles also died when he got shot down in a US army bomber. My other great uncle was in the 82nd airborne and participated in the invasion of sicily
>>
>>70933388
My great grandfather was basically a communist James Bond. A true believer, did what he could to benefit the communist case in Poland, smuggled people through the borders and lots of similar things, he even got quite famous at some point.

That was before war. During war he was escaping to Russia with his son, my grandfather, and some housewife in Stalingrad didn't like the boots he wore(the Polish military officer boot type) and wanted to have his golden watch, so she reported him to the authorities. He spent the next ten years in a gulag in Siberia, then came back to Poland as a ruined man, a shade of what he was before.
>>
>>70936417

True. It would have been easy to push the commies back. The US was rather "new" into WW2 in 1945 compared to the others and the soviets relied heavily on lend lease for their supply lines. If the allies wanted, they could have pushed back the soviets back to moscow and even further possibly. Patton wanted to do that but as you said, you couldn´t sell the story that your dear friend who helped defeating da evil nazis is suddenly your enemy.
>>
Pretty much all of mine were Farmers so didn't need to fight although did have one on my dads side who fought out in Italy.

WW1 however I have loads
>>
My Canadian Grandpa and Grandma did nothing. Even though my Grandpa was of age, he had 7 kids at home so he was given leave to stay to care for his family. He had 7 more kids.

My French Grandpa was an electrician in a power plant, and there he remained throughout the whole war, no matter who was in control. Gotta have that power.

The only one who did anything of note is my Polish great uncle who charged German tanks on horseback, got put into a POW camp, escaped, joined the french resistance and married my grandma's sister. He was a nice old man who could barely speak french when he did in his mid 90s.

The french government denied my great aunt survivors benefits because even though they'd been paying my great uncle retirement for almost 30 years, they needed his birth certificate. Which he did not have. Because he was born in a Polish village on the border of Russia which was destroyed in WW1 around when he was born, and then destroyed again in WW2.
>>
>>70933388
Great grandparents on my mom's side served in the Navy in the Pacific, one as an intelligence officer and the other as a boatswain mate. My dad's side one was still in Sweden and the other was conscripted to work in a factory in Portland (he was too old to be drafted).
>>
>>70933388
My great grandfather on my Swedish side was a national socialist, and was blue blooded, thus, he joined in on the cause for Germany. He later was in the SS and was stationed in Estonia. On my Russian side of the family obe of my great grandfathers died in Stalingrad. The other one fought against the Finns and "liberated" Berlin.

Grandfather was a sniper and messenger in a guerrilla squad. He counted 100+ heads including a few high-ranking officials (which he never knew their names) in his 3 years of fighting. He said to my father that the sniper he used was buried under a huge rock but was never seen again after he tried to unearth it 20 years later after the war. He died before I was born.

One side were wealthy germans, other side fought directly in the croatian army.

Commies fucked both sides up after the war (stole the wealth, killed some).

My paternal grandfather was in an Ordinance company in the Fifth Army in Italy. He delivered explosives and ammo to the front lines. He didn't see much combat, but was strafed by the Luftwaffe "a few times." He also handled POWs and spoke a little German. When he passed away we were able to get him a spot in a national cemetery. We always though he was a sergeant of some kind. Turns out he was a Technician, 4th grade, which is on his grave.

My maternal grandfather drove a subway in NYC during the war.
