Why are Russia's roads so shit?
This is a crudely worded question but I really hope someone can give me an educated response.
Maybe shine a light into internal Russian politics as I am only used to reading about their foreign policy?

Russia is huge m8 and has so many small rural areas that are 100s of miles away from anything. It must be a huge financial and logistical burden to maintain such an enormous road network so it's no surprise lots of road falls into disrepair, especially when the money for repairing the roads probably gets pocketed by Putin's mafia buddies.

If you want to have a good laugh at a country's road infrastructure take a look at DR Congo. They have a total of 1000km of usable road for a population of 80 million. Germany of a similar population has 650,000km of road.

True story -
In addition to many logs that made up those corduroy roads, an awful lot of trucks and other equipment that got "stuck" ended up becoming a permanent part of the road.

It's not that easy to make a road in areas like these. You have to lay down deep foundations because of very cold winters and shit. I guess you can imagine what water+cold can do.
And there is economical part. Why to spend 1 bil $ on a road that leads to a city that doesn't produce $.

Russia is literally the largest country on Earth though and it is not densely populated.
Russia has 144 Million people over 17.1 million km2.
UK has 64.1 million over 242,495 km2.
There is a big difference in weather as well. Places like Siberia are nice enough in the summer but hard in the winter. The harsh conditions destroy the roads every year. For most of Russia, not enough people use the roads to justify the cost of up-keeping them.
Russian urban areas have OK roads, outside of them the roads are shit.
