Look, I'm a lawfag so I'm going to help most of you cunts understand what this talks about. Whenever you hear the phrase "Substantive Due Process" bandied about in America you should be thinking about the 14th amendment of the US constitution. The relevant portion of the 14th amendment provides:

This 14th amendment was ratified shortly after the US civil war. A salient point of this amendment is that it specifically prohibits actions by the State rather than the federal government. If you look at the 1st through 8th ammendments of the Bill of Rights you will note they prohibit actions by the Federal Government not the states.
Now the reason for this amendment was clear. After the civil war, the North wanted to prohibit the former confederate states from using state laws to mistreat former slaves. Since the constitution is the supreme law of the land in the US they need an amendment of the constitution to prohibit the States from doing this because it was not prohibited under the terms of the constitution as is. They also needed another section in the 14th amendment to give the Federal government the authority to enact legislation to give citizens a cause of action against unconstitutional state action at the federal level. see below

Now at this point it seems clear that point of this amendment was to prevent states from mistreating former slaves. Now if you read other portions they speak broadly about nation of origin, color, ethnicity etc. So a fair reading of it also means states can't say "No Irish need apply" either.

Now the terms of the due process clause speak to plainly the manner in which a person may have their rights or liberties deprived by state action not that they may never be deprived. You can still lock up people for crimes, you just have to make sure you give them a trial, let them present evidence, have an attorney etc. You can't just pass a law saying all black folk can be indiscriminately imprisoned.
Now fast forward about a century with a century of justices playing a game of judicial telephone, suddenly that clause of the 14th amendment means something more. Wade decision, which based on the "substantive due-process" right of 14th amendment and the "emanations and penumbras of the bill of rights" the supreme court declared that a State may never prohibit an abortion under circumstances, and proceeded to divine a 3 tiered black letter law system which they claim is in the constitution.
Now regardless of whether or not you support abortion rights, this is bad judging. It is farcical to believe that an amendment designed to prevent states from mistreating former slaves or people based on their race, ethnicity, or nation of origin now suddenly means state's can not pass a law restricting abortion. This judicial reading dramatically expands the power of the federal government over the states, because now the federal government can through Supreme court decisions, and congressional actions force states to behave in a certain way, and people within those states behave a certain way.
