College and well off people (Often young people) were the most likely to buy into the "Help the world and be part of the worker's party!" bullshit, believing communism would make everyone like them, without effort. Then as time went on, they wanted the power that came with communism, seeing what the party leaders did. No communist wanted to be the worker, they wanted to be Stalin.
It then became a social thing, people feel socially superior because they want to "Help" the "worker" and begin to spin a victim complex, accusing everyone that didn't bend over for them as an "Enemy of the people"
That's why, today, the common communist totes starbucks in one hand, an iphone in the other, with Facebook pulled up to "OccupyDemocrats", while preaching their obvious superiority and rightness and tolerance and love, while viciously condemning and hating anything that challenges them. They've grown in a victim culture and can't see what the fuck they have and how blessed they are for having a roof over their head and a full stomach.
