Serious question: wouldn't the entire education system improve immensely if we did in fact make college free BUT ONLY FOR THE BEST ONES?
We make it so to enter any course you need to pass a certain entrance test (with no gender or race quotas, complete fairness). If you do pass it (and keep a minimum gpa), then college for you it's free.
We could make college great again. The level of the graduates would improve a lot. A college degree would have value again. And since only the top 10-5% would be able to enter, the expense would be quite acceptable and in fact more than compensated by the higher level of graduates.
Higher education isn't basic education. It's not a right, it's a privilege, and so it should be, because that's the only way to keep its level high. A privilege that should depend not on money but on abilities.

It took me 3 years to get in. That's the reason we have pretty much the oldest university students.. It's nothing unusual to see 25 year old freshmen

Our univerisites aren't that great. They do very little research, they're more like mass producing work force. Engineering is by far the most popular major

The way you solve the problems is by letting the market decide. If people can't afford to go to one college there is going to be another college that's cheaper because they're doing things differently like streaming classes online or whatever. There should simply be alternatives for people who don't want to take loans or can't afford an expensive college.

That's what we're already doing. There are very expensive colleges and cheaper ones. But that clearly doesn't work, or the problem wouldn't exist.

That's what a scholarship is. If you pass the SAT or ACT with a high enough score, you can get free admission to college (as well as free meals and free books).
Granted the harder the college is to get into, the more you have to do. Going to the University of Kansas for free will take less work than going to Harvard or Yale for free. Even a perfect ACT score and perfect SAT score wouldn't be enough. You'd also need a 4.0 GPA, and a shit ton of extra curriculars.
