Its the opposite now kind of. Mainly because machines can do all the jobs but merchants. Being a soldier in modern times doesn't have the skill ceiling that being a samurai did. Guns are easy mode. They do help overthrow governments because even if you are shit at fighting you have a decent chance even against a experienced shooter.

Samurai weren't simple foot soldiers, they were noblemen. And they didn't protect the country so much as do infighting between each other, and after the nation was unified they were just low-level feudal lords
