Degradation of the family.
Study after study after study shows children raised by a single mother are more likely to:
- end up in prison
- use drugs
- commit violent crimes
- drop out of school

The American Dream is that your children will have a better life than you did. It's difficult to do when your kid drops out of high school at 16, then spends the rest of their life either working at McDonald's or living on welfare.

I would honestly be in favor of government-subsidized marriage counseling if it actually lead to a lower divorce rate.

Simple. The entire United States government system is based on taking money from the people and giving it the people in power. No one can become successful if they're constantly dealing with money being stolen from them by the people they're supposed to be looking up to to make sure their 'American Dream' comes true. Unless you hit the fucking jackpot, you're going to be sitting in a shitty spot for forever or you will become a mindless drone like most and believe your life has meaning because you're working for equality or some random bullshit that actually isn't needed in the first world, at least in the capacity most people aim for. Along with this, these mindless drones are made from birth because they are put through a strict school system that's specifically made to make sure people grow up to make money for the people in power through employment. You can tell because the school system was made during the industrial revolution specifically to make sure people would know what they were doing when they got employed and it hasn't changed much since then. In conclusion, the American Dream is just another fairy tale told to U.S. citizens to keep them obedient and working towards what they think is greatness for themselves, when it's really just continued greatness for their overlords.

It's not unachievable. But nothing is ever guaranteed either. You need to have some motivation. The problem is that the "American Dream" has been conflated with eking out a comfortable life as a wage slave (which are two different things).

The American dream is not dead. But the easy-street of wage-cuckery is definitely dead. The reasons are:

1) Inflation (and the decline of the dollar's purchasing power).
2) Technology
3) Globalisation.

>taking money from the people and giving it the people in power

how can you not see that owners and management do this to workers in the process of production

i mean, i have a good idea of why. daddy or mommy or both are management or owners of a business, and/or you otherwise identify with management/owners

i remember talking to this dude i was in the navy with. we were having something along the lines of this same conversation. he protested to me that his family consisted of farmers. after a few more questions i determined his grandpap owned several very large farms and was a multimillionaire, which he stood to inherit

ideology has nothing to do with who is right and everything to do with justifying our interests. a dude has a business, his interest is in maximizing his return. he can't do that if i'm in there, agitating for a strike for higher wages. there's only the conflict, everything else is horse shit

American culture. We have lost our values. We have forsaken our traditions. The American today lives not in pursuit of any ideals, but for pure hedonistic desires.

Define the American Dream, OP. Who says there has to be just one? What makes you think there is one monolithic, overarching goal that we all share?

Home ownership? Who gives a shit? Renting might mean you don't have "roots," whatever the fuck that means. It might mean you're paying your hard earned money and having nothing to show for it. But what are you getting in return? The freedom to pick up and go in a relatively short amount of time (if you think "waah, my lease isn't up!" is somehow a barbaric shackle, try having a mortgage).

Is it marriage, 2 kids without gender issues, a dog, and a white picket fence? How is that not achievable? Those are all things you can have. All that and more.

But you'll have to sacrifice to get it. You'll have to decide what it is you want, make long-term plans, make commitments. You'll have to fucking grow up and stop being a child. The dream is out there, anons. You can have it. You'll just have to work for it.

All of these blue pilled retards in this thread. I'll give you the actual reasons.

1. Globalisation has increased the labour pool by several orders of magnitude, yet in recent decades demands for jobs has not gone up enough to facilitate this increase supply.
2. Women entering the workforce also essentially doubled the labour pool overnight.
3. People refusing to subsidise tertiary education because they think because a fraction of potential graduates will only get degrees in women's studies is enough reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater.
4. Stagnant wages since the 70s.
5. Regressive tax system that has accomplished virtually nothing except to consolidate wealth in the hands of the only the highest income earners.
6. Automatisation killing off traditional secondary industry jobs.
7. Increases in population that have increased demand for housing while wages have not gone up enough to facilitate people being able to afford the same houses their parents did.

I'm sure there's more, these are just the reasons I can think of off the top of my head.

Wages have failed to increase proportionally with inflation while costs of living have outpaced it.

1950, adjusted for inflation (nominal)
>Median family income - $32,500 - ( $3,300 )
>Median cost of a new car - $14,800 - ( $1,500 )
>Median cost of a new home - $72,300 - ( $7,350 )
>Median cost of raising a child to adulthood - $157,000 - ( $16,000 )

2015
>Median family income - $51,000
>Median cost of a new car - $31,000
>Median cost of a new home - $190,000
>Median cost of raising a child to adulthood - $230,000

Total family income increased by 60%, but that's largely because the overwhelming majority of families have both parents working as opposed to just the father. So in actuality, median single-earner income has decreased by roughly 20%.

Meanwhile the cost of owning a car has doubled, the cost of owning a house has nearly tripled, and the cost of raising a family is about 50% greater than it should be.

The American dream has become more and more difficult to attain, especially for the middle class, because nobody can fucking afford it anymore.
>>
Interference in the market.

If people were free to build houses, we'd build more of them and build them everywhere.

Doctors used to make house calls. They weren't overburdened with malpractice insurance and licensing restrictions that limit supply for basic care.
>>
>>70895946

just to be clear, we're talking about a new car, a house in the burbs, wife and 2.3 kids right?
>>
decline of unions, globalization, less government spending on productive things (more spending on unproductive things so more spending overall), immigration, women working.
>>
>>70896174
The problem is less to do with those particular things and more the trend that they're connected with. The American Dream is a little different for each person, but generally (especially for the middle class) it boils down to:

Good job, good home, good wife, good family, good life.

When getting a new or even used car is about twice the cost of what it should be, or finding a new or used home is three times as expensive or more, etc... it starts becoming harder and harder for that American Dream to become a reality
