Fuck the current education system. How can we fix it to actually prepare students for real life?

>fucking idiots in pic.
No, the i is not an imaginary number. It is an pre defined variable.
>>
>>70858686
At this point it's actually irrelevant.
There's the internet.
And every single teenager that complains about 'school sux and didnt teach real stuff!1!' has a smart phone.
If they really cared they'd googled it.
>>
>>70858686

you can learn about real life in real life. school is about learning how to be useful to other people.
>>
>>70859077
That's what I'm saying. They can teach electronics in high school instead of useless theoretical shit like imaginary numbers.

They do if you don't go to some third world shithole school full of idiots that need babysitting.

There is even a push in my local area to have programming taught as an elective language credit in place of spanish/german/etc. Infinitely more useful in my opinion.

School is preparation for working life, math class is to filter out retards

a child could balance a checkbook, that's not even worth spending time on.

That's what your fucking parents are for.

Mandatory school lays the basic for higher studies, so you can actually be, you know, useful to society.

School is where you are taught the achievements of humanity, the principles of a civilized society, and most importantly the skills you need to contribute your part to both. A school is where you learn how to learn, where you are taught how to teach yourself. It is not a daycare.

Also, whats so hard about understanding that school is supposed to give you a decent general education and not to prepare you for fucking every practical aspect of modern life and the globalized world.
Do this shit on your own, well at least I expect this from every human being interested in self actualization or personal growth.

Its choice men, nothing else, if you really think that learning about a checkbook is gonna help you more in life than knowing about sqrt(-1), then you shouldnt be there anyway.
The shit comes when 40% of your school time is filled with Filosofy, English, the second language and so on, Dont get me wrong, they are also important but knowing that X autor wrote Y novel and that novel belongs to Z periot is stupid, because at the end of the day you will know something that you can look up in 5 secs, but you wont be able to build an argument or to understand a text/document and this is really the problem with the school system

In England they don't. They stick you on a conveyor belt and show you what to "study" and that's it.

I wish someone would have told me it really put myself in the correct state of mind when taking exams. When you are studying history what the idiot teacher doesn't tell you is what is history? What do Historians look for? How do they look for it? And to always remember when answering questions you should do it as if you were a historian yourself, you need to throw yourself into the role.

Each year the classes would level up. Science started in grade nine as Earth Science talking about volcanoes and tornadoes and shit. Then it was Biology, then Chemistry then Physics.

But then we had a shit ton of elective classes you could choose from. Myself I attended Computer Programing, JAVA, HTML, cooking, woodshop, media literacy (understanding how demographics and the media works), an extra gym class, intro to electronics (then after that you could take Networking), CAD.

Canada seldom disappoints.
That being said, does the average person need to know calculus? Probably not. Would it help society? Probably. Should we fail kids because they can't/don't want to learn high-level math. No. An education system that fails to create functioning members of society and instead makes them drop out and get themselves put in prison isn't a good system. It would help if people still had fathers and the burden wasn't mostly on the government to educate and provide guidance to children.
Also, remove pic related.

OK, but I've got a letter from a credit card company here that says that I can actually spend more than I have, and they'll cover it as long as I give them a tiny fraction of the cost each month.

You're preaching to the choir as to how simple this is, but somehow consumer debt is a massive industry that literally enslaves huge parts of the population. Voluntarily. So there must be some sort of educational gap here.

My guess is even if you have a class whose entire curriculum is "income - expense = savings", it'd help because people will know something's fishy about the banks' and lenders' claims.

It was preparing you for real life, but people keep saying BUT MUH MATHEMATICS HOW DUZ DIS HALP ME.

Education may not seem entirely practical but its about learning how to use your brain.

Ever watch videos of public speakers from the 50s and 60s? If they're english, they were probably made to learn latin, a dead language, and a bunch of shakespeare completely by rote, etc... how does that prepare them for real life, you say?

It just makes connections in the brain. You can't understand your "job" properly if you don't understand more basic concepts.
>>
>>70868105
yes it does, school very well teaches you how to balance your check book and many other real life lessons, maybe they should go to a real school instead of private schools.

And regarding imaginary numbers.

It's important to teach people how to think about and learn abstract concepts. Again, its not about teaching "useful knowledge", but "how to gain useful knowledge".

If we just train you from age 5 to be a plumber , you're going to be rather dull and inflexible.

Additionally, I'm assuming you have SOME understanding of imaginary numbers, right? Have you ever spoken to people from countries that have no formal education system? Noted how they think, how focused they get on concrete ideas? Say thank you, teacher.

As fucked up as our education system is, these kinds of morons are the reason Bernie is even on the ballot. Education is meant to provide you with the TOOLS to achieve success, not guarantee it the minute you and everyone else with a pulse is handed their diploma. The fact that people even feel entitled to an education at all is baffling.

Believe it or not, there was a time when if you wanted to know something, you actually had to go out and research it in a library. No internet, no smartphone to instantly access the largest repository of knowledge in human history. At the touch of your fingers and more importantly FOR FREE*. But God forbid students today show any kind of agency in building their own future instead of following whatever plan Ms.Golbergstein in counseling has already laid out for them.

Just some basic life skills

• Critical thinking and reasoning. Encouraging people to be able to recognize other's points of views, thinking with their head before major decisions.
• Personal finance (i.e budgeting, mortgages, loans, the power of compound interest)
• Music and Arts. Creativity is something that should be encouraged. Learning how to play a musical instrument is really good for your brain.
• Computer programming. It can be tied in with Maths when applying some functions and formulas. A bit of recursion, loops, functions. Not any GUI shit.
• Basic cooking skills (cooking different types of meats, pasta, rice, vegetables etc)

I know a lot of you are going to say parents should be teaching their children this, but most of this personally I had to learn myself the hard way.
>>
>>70858686
MATHs are there to teach you how to think logically and critically. It isn't all about the practical application of functions and formulas.

No, it squares to -1. -1 has two square roots actually, i and -i. But it is also a variable, in the sense that the complex plane is isomorphic to the real plane as an algebraic object. You just have a different multiplication.

It is also quite helpful to solve a lot of problems in mathematics which have pratical applications, like differential equations or in fourier analysis. You also need them a lot in quantummechanics, which is where a lot of current reserach in physics is being done.
>>

No. Basic life skills are the job of the parent.
School is about making a person useful to the labour/ work market.

Critical thinking is so important that if you know how to do that, things like "personal finance" become something you can quickly calculate.

I do think there should be classes on teaching high schoolers how to do basic grown up shit because nobody wants to deal with grown people who don't know how to do grown people shit.

Maybe teach a class on ethics in the workplace too because honestly nobody wants to work with grown people who act like they're still in high school. All of that he-said, she-said gets tiring really fast. If you're 30+ and a general manager, you shouldn't be crying a little babby because you had to work an extra hour.

Make it mandatory too along with the other math and sciences shit

Anybody with half a fuck's-worth of knowledge about circuitry knows that imaginary numbers are absolutely necessary, so thanks for pointing that out to the plebs.

OP,
The word "imaginary" has a different meaning in mathematics compared to normal usage. It is not literally an arbitrarily 'imagined' number -- it is a complex number, outside of the set of real numbers. It is a unique type of number and not even remotely similar to an imaginary, mythological beast.

The guy talking about education giving the tools for success and not the motivation and the capacity is absolutely correct.

You have Language to learn how to talk and write, Math to be logic and not be a retard, Geography and History to know how other people came to be, what they do and how they got there. Physical Education so you don't end up like a murican fatso stuck inside your house.
What else these people want? How to masturbate or how to cross the street?

>>
>>70870567

It would do no harm in teaching them these things in school and offering them as classes. it would only help to improve a youth's ability to perform out in the real world.

What if their parents are immigrants who just came over from a different country and they themselves don't know how to do it? Then the parents would be unable to teach their children how its done.

High schools should be more than just about learning mathematics and proper grammar. At worst, it would be just another high school class that they'll forget about, and at best it would give them proper everyday skills.

This, basically. The number of hours I wasted on stupid HS courses which taught only what you should just learn at home by being a non-braindead human bean (and probably already did), is astonishing. Mind you, this was on the highest possible level of public HS possible in the Netherlands and with a STEM-oriented course package. We went from differential equations one hour to literally making a paper maché shoe the other. There were something like 7-10 obligatory courses over the 6y of HS which were absolutely useless, yet the school could not abolish because these curricula were state-sanctioned. In retrospect, I would have killed for 3-4 hours of extra mathematics, physics or Latin in stead of that propagandistic bullshit. One of the worst was 'Maatschappijleer' ('Societal studies'), which basically consisted of 'leftism good, rightism bad' for a whole year.

It doesn't matter, if you teach people not to go into debt, the credit card companies will sell you investments instead, that's not really debt, that's making money!

Just like goldman sachs did for Greece in 2006. Greece wasn't allowed to borrow more money due to EU rules and the risk it would bring. So Goldman bought all the income from road-taxes for 10 years for a lump sum. Because selling future income totally isn't the same as borrowing more. I wonder why they were unable to pay debt, gee.

Unfortunately, you're not even wrong. Even in my days, there was talk in the government about changes in curriculum because it would be unfair to non-native Dutch speakers. My school was christian and only had Havo, Vwo and Gymnasium, so there were relatively few mussels. There was this one Afghan kid, he was always praised by the leftist teachers for, well, being in school whilst being Afghan I guess. He was expelled after he stole mobile phones during physical education. Unfortunately, after a couple of years, the school merged with a VMBO school and it became basically Calais. It went to utter shit and that was very sad because it used to be a very good school. Luckily this happened not very long before I graduated.

Sure, I remember ANW, that was where we had to make that stupid paper maché shoe. It was basically just all sorts of science stuffed into one course but with all the actual science taken out. My parents spent quite a bit of money to get my older brother on the nicest school with the best facilities and about the only school with reasonably good computers.

It was in kanaleneiland. For non dutchies, a kind of little morocco. It didn't help that my brother had dark curly hair. He was a real nigger during his school years and two years after. I could write a book about his crimes that I witnessed.

I've taught at a lot of different schools the last year and the five shittiest ones, four had over 60% muslim classes, one pure white but dumb as rocks.

Of the five best, they were all 80+% white.

Except the very best school. The classes were small, the teachers organised and good contact with kids. A lot of mutual trust. Happiness. A place of learning.

It was an orthodox jewish school. The police came up to me each time I came close to the school and I had to identify myself.

That's when I started reading about pol and the holocaust.

School is made for kids to learn what they might want to do as a job in regards to academia. That's why every course is an introductory course for math (statistics, algebra, geometry, calculus), science (biology, chemistry, geology), history (american, european, african, asian), and whatever arts the kids are interested in. Sure many of those kids won't give a shit about the quadratic formula, but some will and want to pursue mathematics or engineering as their career. To not even introduce these topics just because most people won't is dumb because now no one will be interested in any of these subjects if you don't teach them it. Checkbooks, loans, and that type of shit is for your parents to teach you. School is essentially 'introduction to academia'.
>>
>>70873860
There's actually a lot of value in learning the history of science. If you go through each discovery as humans did in the past, chronologically, then you start to understand the scientific method and process far better than learning the end result of giants building on giants.

But no, this was just meant for non-science people to get science people.
>>
>>70874089
why spend money introducing someone to academia who has no interest in it though? imo kids should have to pass an entrance test to go to an academic highschool, and otherwise go to a vocational highschool. being allowed to opt out of the academic highschool even if they pass as well. vocational highschool could probably just be 2 years long too

the western school system is fucked for multiple reasons. My parents were/are teachers and I have had an inside view of the system for about 20+ years now.

The biggest problem with the system is actually outside of it. People like to blame teachers or the government or the cariciulm but the honest truth is that current public schools are used as little more than a day care center for children ages 5 to 18.

Parents work 9-5 and need a place to put their runts while they work. The majority of these parents really don't care how their children do in school and in cases of areas that are riddled with gang culture often actively encourage kids to fail or try to get themselves thrown out of the system.

You want to fix public schools? Fix parents first

Imaginary Numbers aren't one dimensional numeric values, they are two dimensional, just like complex numbers.

The Imaginary Number i is the graph point (0, 1), because the tangent of this point is undefined (y/x - 1/0, undefined) So when you're presenting a point on a graph as a complex number, you need to present it as xj + yi (where i is the point (0,1) and j is the point (1,0)). This is all very important when you're dealing with Vectors (and if you should know that Almost all mechanical engineering has to do with Vectors)

so imaginary number i is very important to any and all 2 dimensional math.
