In besmayah we shared the base with other armies and one of them was the US, all the material the Iraqis got was American made, so anytime of the week, they wouldn't allow us to train them ourselves but rather take the recruits to do "special weapon training" and they weren't allowed to tell us shit about it, we actually had some Kurds desert one day and some of my buddies assured me it was because of the "special training" they received.

2nd: 250.000 civilians are in the city under government protection. You know what happens to the population of besieged cities
3rd: it is a fucking symbol. It is like a daily reminder that ISIS is not that all conquering machine they think of themself. While this is pretty much clear now it wasn't so even just one year ago.
4th: Future operational basis. Once the SAA has enough strenght to conquer and hold(!) the highway to Deir the city will work as a staging ground for future operations

Except that you can provide a continuous fire of 120mm airburts on a much larger area than with a VBIED. Artillery is the god of the battlefield. A VBIED can be stopped with the lightest of AT weapons, AT mines, and its explosion is utterly ineffective against anyone in cover. Though I've yet to have seen a singular foxhole or trench during the entire conflict, so they do have some effect against Arabs.
