What I did was cutdown, smoke at your normal rate but record every cgi, the next day cut out one. Once this is normal cut out another, and keep going until you're down to 1 cigarette a day. It's a slow and long process.
What I personally did is forced myself to have 3 cigarettes a day, morning, lunch and night. If you have the discipline try that, after 2 months I was smoke free.

Satisfying a craving of any kind is enjoyable. I don't feel relaxed when I smoke, I feel satisfied. The same way you feel satisfied after eating when you were hungry. The same way you feel satisfied after drinking when you are thirsty. It's just another craving.
I'm a neuroscientist (sort-of, working but I have no degree yet). The need to smoke, eat, drink, and fuck are all functions of the same neurological circuitry. Smoking cigarettes just adds to one of life's simple pleasures.
As far as meaningless pleasures go, cigarettes are cheap and they don't really screw with your immediate priorities. Alcohol is also cheap, but it can ruin your life. Cigarettes obviously can too, but the fun part about that is they ruin your life by killing you, so it doesn't really matter if they do.
Here's the bottom line. You're not going to live forever. You should try to enjoy life as much as possible. If you choose to indulge in unhealthy foods, you might become fat and get depressed. If you choose to indulge in other drugs (alcohol, weed, etc.), you might lose your job. You can smoke cigarettes and have your life proceed relatively normally. Smoking alleviates boredom. So smokers stand around doing boring things, which makes those around them bored. There are cigarettes around and if you don't leave you will be so bored you smoke one, or maybe a few and then start to buy your own and become a smoker yourself.
Smokers feel smoking is *something to do*.
Once you start, being around smokers is torture, because you have all the smoke smells and people smoking, and the people themselves sit around and aren't bored because they are smoking, but you are bored out of your mind because you are not smoking.
But they don't force you to smoke.

Well I definitely did not start to "look cool", as I had to hide it and made sure that nobody saw me.
Oh and for you people who think that you can't stop, I quit shortly more then a year ago, after smoking for more then 30 years. No gum or vaping or any of that shit. You just stop doing it and then don't ever do it again, it's not hard at all. Finally deciding to quit was the hard part, I thought about quitting for years, I figured it would be impossible since it was so ingrained.
Here's what I did: I threw out all of my cigarettes and then I phoned up a relative I do not respect, and told them I am quitting.
I would never, ever fail at anything in front of them, or do anything that could even potentially lead to such a situation. So that was that, then it was done, and I had to quit forever, and I have, and I will never smoke again.
