Healthcare and and "free" school system is awesome in germany, also universities cost 200-300 euros a year. To pay for that, germany has the second highest taxes (overall) in europe. If you are a single male you can get close to 60% in very rare cases, but 50-55% is normal. Goes down to 30-35% when married.
The only problem I have with this "socialist" system is that it also spends too much money on other useless stuff. You probably could reduce taxes by 5-10% and keep the level of health care and education easily, but we give to refugees and other EU countries which could be used otherwise. And our state propaganda is way to expensive, just one of the several TV stations (ZDF) costs more than all of BBC. They are really throwing the money out of the window. But I guess thats the goal with systems in place like the IMF/World bank.
Also germany has the biggest "rich-poor" wage gap in europe, I think only in the US it´s bigger. The middle class is milked. It is easy to see that the system will collapse sometime soon. If we could remove the kabaps in germany (50% of muslims unemployed, 75% of their "females", 4million muslims, 2.5% of population, without the extra refugees) we´d safe a lot of money and the system could continue to work. Tuition has gotten as high as it is because of government subsidized loans. If the government subsidizes all of education you'll see your taxes go through the roof when universities inevitably raise tuition even more.
And IF there are laws that prevent universities from artificially spiking tuition like that, they'll just lower professor salaries and hire more adjuncts to keep uni administers and distinguished professors on board, ultimately leading to a decline in the quality of education. Meanwhile, private school tuition will skyrocket, as it'll become a better alternative to "free" public education and supply & demand takes over.

Just do what we have done and cap maximum school debt. It's $0/yr if you make less than 50k, $7k/yr if you make 50k-100k, etc. 90% of the time you end up getting scholarships/bursuaries that basically pay you a few grand a year to be in school, plus you get the government student stipends. Just because you can't be an engineer doesn't mean you can't find a better job. A low wage job and food stamps is a stepping stone to a better life, it's scraping the bottom of the barrel because it's what you have to do to get by and be a productive member of society.
If you want to go to college, do it. Sign up for FAFSA and apply at a community college. Work and go to school, save every dime you can. Transfer to a university after you've done all the coursework you can for free and then take out loans to pay for the last couple years of college.
