Assuming his version of the story is accurate, the school overstepped. According to the SC students have restricted 1st amendment rights at school, but that's because of the need to maintain order. Learning to deal with an asshole colleague is part of life, and it doesn't seem what he did should cause that kind of disruption.

Making comments on Twitter aren't inherently disruptive to the learning environment.
If he was making the tweets, say, during class, sure; but, if they're made outside of school, they really don't impact the learning environment since it's not on school grounds.
