which is why China is building 20 of these fuckers over the next five years and an additional 30 reactors with different designs.
What you have to realise is that all the nuclear waste in the world, fits on a single football field, and those were mostly shitty, old reactors.
The new designs can burn the waste of old reactors, there has even been a test reactor in the US that makes more fuel that it uses and it has been around since the 70s.
Moreover, these new reactors cannot melt down. Where in the past you had to slow down the reaction and keep it cool in order to keep it stable, these reactions stop automatically in case of power loss. Another huge improvement is that the newer designs no longer need a containment building because they no longer have to plan for the event of pressure loss, which causes the water to flash to steam and expand its volume 40 times in under a second. New designs don't operate under pressure, very little can go wrong.
The worst radioactive disaster in the past few decades was Fukushima, an event triggered by and earthquake which caused power loss. The main backup generators instantly switched on but then the tsunami hit and wiped those out, plus the secondary backup generators because the waves were higher than the tsunami scenario. Still, nothing was really wrong until the retards from TEPCO decided to depressurize the system, the coolant which was already performing poorly instantly evaporated and there were radiation leaks.
This disaster, brought on by a once a decennia natural disaster but ultimately made significant by human failure, involved an old reactor based on a 70 year old design. The damage, while hyped up by the media, was actually very mild. The maps that were released right after the disaster, showing how the US would get rekt had no basis in reality. Research even showed that there was no increase in thyroid cancer when one accounts for preemptively screening everyone.
