The only thing gold is useful for is being inflation-resistant. If you were saving up for something important in the near term, like a couple years away, and GIC's and gov bonds did not exist, gold would be a reasonable way to save your wealth. If, on the other hand, you're saving your money to earn returns on it, there is nothing to be earned off of gold.
