False. On a *small* scale, with a community of like-minded individuals, it can work. E.g. a commune / kibbutz (oy vey.) IIRC even Marx said there would be problems with scaling the concept up, and so it proved. It doesn't work for nation states because the close community and sense of mutual obligation can't exist at that scale.

This is not how I have seen others describe it. Communists may say that money so far as currency that has a value based on supply and demand should be abolished in favor of some kind of currency based on labour. You work one hour, you get one credit and the like.
Obviously, you have to refine this. More socially valuable jobs, such as those providing basic infrastructure, have to be incentivized more to ensure people are actually doing them. The state can offer credit bonuses for completing certain tasks that it needs done. The same can apply to more skilled labor; if you must spend a lot of time in education and training to understand how to perform your job, it is only fair that it offers more in credits to compensate for the time spent learning it.
Naturally, when people have so much more freedom on how to approach work, you also have to have a lot of accountability to ensure that people do the work they say they will. Perhaps that wasn't as possible before, but it certainly is now thanks to technology. What I'd propose is having each worker being required to submit a work schedule in advance for each week and hourly reports for each hour worked to local bureaus whose job is to log this sort of thing. Anyone who doesn't is a fraud.
So then you may ask, how does this solve the basic problem of scarcity? For natural resources, companies wishing to refine them could submit aptitude tests to a neutral third party evaluation company/state agency, agreeing to go with their judgment as to how these resources are best used. For individuals, the best I've come up with is first come, first served, sadly.
Everyone gets food, water, shelter, clothing everyone also gets cut off from these things if they go too long without working, etc.
Sure, you get inequality and classes possibly arising from this, but people have no one to blame but themselves for that
