I remember reading about this. A Statistical professor looked at the numbers and how they defined those things.
The short was that they only defined Islamic Extremism by Al-Qaeda , that is to say, only those killed by people found to have direct ties to Al-Qaeda specifically were counted. Any other terrorist group or lone actors making claims were not counted.
For white extremism it was anyone who was white and made a claim of superiority.
He took the full numbers but left out 9/11 as a statistical anomaly (and also compiled an end result with it included for the sake of fullness)and when taken on the same terms as white extremism more were killed by Islamic extremists.
The biggest conclusion of them though was that it was all under 1%. The difference between the two was a few point decimals and the two together were almost nothing.
