Depends on the area. Chicagoland is a microcosm of urban to semirural. Suburbs vary greatly, but a good percentage of them don't suck. I'm in the immediate western suburbs. Everything is expensive as fuck with Cook County taxes.

I moved to the Chicago area for college about 5 years ago, and now I'm stuck here.
I came here from northern wisconsin, and thought it would be exciting. I don't find it exciting anymore, it just sucks. People are so rude it is unbelievable. From the minute you wake up till the minute you go to sleep, all you do is fight with people. On the highway, on the street, at work, at college, at the grocery store, everybody is totally insane. Also probably the worst scenery I have ever seen, absolutely NO outdoor recreation for hours in any direction.
I have been trying very hard to move. I've been sending applications to Colorado, Wyoming, and New Mexico. Anybody have any suggestions how the fuck I can get out of here?

I live in what we call west central IL, about 30 minutes from MO and ~2 hours to St Louis.
People here are, for the most part good, friendly, and honest. Not particularly educated and outside of business owners, a few professionals, and farmers who have HUGE operations nobody has very much money. Biggest industry is probably corn.
Also, geographically IL is almost entirely conservative but since the bulk of the population is in the Chicago metro area, we live under Democrat dictatorship.

I escaped to the promised land of Indiana and have never looked back. Chicago is the most corrupt city in the country, and it's corruption managed to ruin even downstate Illinois which was already awful to begin with.
Avoid like the plague. Any state bordering it is better, save *maybe* Missouri. If you like the city life Chicago has to offer, there are plenty of lively cities on the coasts with far fewer issues. If you're like me and a country guy, rural Indiana/Wisconsin/The rest of the god damn Midwest is vastly superior to rural Illinois.
It breaks my heart to see my birth state in such disrepair but it is really doomed beyond saving.
