I rent a two-bedroom apartment. It's huge and has tons of amenities that I never use. I like to move a lot, so there's no reason to buy anything. I have way more than enough disposable income not to care that I'm just renting. Lived in a hotel, first couple months of this year. Property taxes are usually no more than maybe 2% most places. Most mortgage calculators assume ~1% and thats probably a pretty good guess. If the house is paid off and costs <200k you should have no problem managing expenses even if you make minimum wage.
