I don't know if it's necessarily nihilism. Most Atheists will agree on many of the same morals as theists, those that affect other people. Altruistic behavior being the central theme rather than a Deity's commands. So they're not really moral nihilists in the sense that moral nihilists don't believe in ANY morals. Killing someone is neither inherently right or wrong in their eyes society has just made it wrong.
As an Agnostic Atheist (I don't know for sure I just lean towards there not being anything supernatural for lack of supporting evidence), I think murder is inherently wrong, we have intrinsic emotions in response to killing, it's traumatic to us even if justified. So I do have morals in regards to not killing, not stealing, and not cheating on someone I'm in a relationship with (in all those cases I'm causing harm to someone else), but I do not have morals in regards to premarital sex (if both parties are consenting), drug/alcohol use (if responsible about it and using it in my own home, and not getting myself addicted), not making graven images, not using the Lord's name in vain, etc etc. A lot of religious morals are pretty dumb.
Most Atheists will also agree that life has a purpose, to continue and pass down knowledge to the next generation and continue to develop our species to grow in knowledge and advance in technology and evolve to a society that is peace.. basically the ideal we have is that instead of wanting to die and go to heaven, we want to create as close to an idealized heavenly existence as we can in our real, tangible world that we know exists. A society where people are happy, taken care of, have fulfilling jobs and hobbies, and people are at peace.
So not existential nihilists either. Above all I think most Atheists are humanists.
