Is this the year that the GOP/Republican party goes the way of the Whigs?
If they don't win this year, they're done.

Na. A Kasich/Rubio ticket is happening and it's likely to win.

They are going to kill themself. Trump not getting the nomination would already be almost certain to finish them, but not giving it to Cruz either could be the most retarded thing they ever have done.
Trump and Bernie form their own parties and break the 2-party system.
Hillary may win this election but the political landscape will be transformed for the better

Just Google the 1824 election
If Trump is enough to kill the GOP the GOP deserves to die
They're out of touch with reality, and the American people.
Canadians encountered this phenomenon a few years ago with the Liberals, and in the last election with the Conservatives.
The Republicans will lose this year, and then hopefully, have a sort of reformation in their party to make them viable candidates again. If they don't they're just going to keep losing.

It won't be Cruz unless he wins Cali. If they're not going with Trump they'll pick some establishment figure to save the furniture

The Republican party is fine. Even if the presidential campaign is a wash, they still control the senate, and they still offer fair fights at the local level.
The Republican party has ALWAYS been full of acrimony, it's just that before the internet, they were good at keeping it quiet and pandering to the base.
Like, how do I put this....
The GOP has a lot of energy, because unlike the Democratic party, which generally operates as a union at the lower levels(You start off as an assistant/volunteer, and work your way up mostly by 'paying your dues', and eventually, after many years, you are given the opportunity to move forward by seniority), the Republican Party is known for simply allowing the most influential members, no matter how young or rogue, to have a platform, and are promised full backing, as long as they don't do anything awful.
Keeping that high energy, and positivity at the lower levels will do a lot to keep the Republican Party energetic. It is okay to lose a presidential race. Republicans still hold REAL power in our government by controlling legislation.

By that logic the Democrats won during the Reagan era and the GOP won in the Clinton era, because they controlled Congress

Those were razor-thin margins compared to the kinds of supermajorities the GOP has today.
