You may be behind the times. In high school we were taught that America is evil for bombing Japan. We were taught that America turned down reasonable requests for surrender in order to test the bomb and scare the soviets.
I actually disagreed with what I was taught in High school. I do not feel that the Japanese requests for conditional surrender were reasonable or even sincere. For one, the Japanese surrender terms seem constructed in such a way as to allow the possibility of Japan one day becoming strong enough to take on the US again. Unconditional surrender prevented this and allowed Japan to prosper as America's bitch.
Secondly, even after the nukes, hardliners in the military and government tried to stop Hirohito's surrender even to the point where they wanted him dead. Loyalist forces were able to stop the conspiracy and allow the Emperor's message to be broadcast, but Japan was a hairs breadth away from being taken over in a Coup, rejecting surrender and fighting to the death EVEN AFTER WE NUKED THEM.
As a final point I've heard the argument that the idea of Japanese fanaticism was mythical, that a mainland invasion would not have resulted in massive civilian and military casualties on both sides and that the military projections to that effect were flawed.
However we saw that example lived out for real on Okinawa and other japanese islands where mass suicides of civilians occurred while others armed themselves with anything they could find including sharpened sticks to fight the americans because they were told that americans were cannibals who had come to eat their children.
Also note the examples of jap soldiers continuing to fight the war for decades after its end on remote islands because they were cut off from command and either did not receive or did not believe the news of surrender. Such dedication is unique to the Japanese, so I do not think it is exaggeration to say that the Japanese had an exceptional fanaticism in this period.
