My dad picked Canada because:
1. Australia was too far.
2. He heard the weather was shit in the UK.
3. He also considered the US (New York) but didn't really say why he didn't choose it. Although, he definitely was glad he didn't move there since NYC was absolute shit in those days.
Ultimately, I think he chose Canada because he thought it was basically all rural like his home country. After he arrived, he was in for a big surprise.
