Honestly it was embarassingly recent. Maybe 20. The truth of the matter is that the Christian Crusades, at least the early ones, were defensive campaigns. Its one of the least-corrected, oft-cited historical innacuracies because of muh oppression.

What crusades are you talking about?
The Baltic crusades were successful. The Albigensian Crusade to root out the Cathars was succesfull. The reconquista can be argued as being partly a crusade as well as the Ottoman wars
