It may just be due to the facf that i was raised in a "cult", but i dont find a ritual celebrating parental supervision odd at all. My mother did the same for me with the other mothers in the commune with their sons (except we didnt dance, just ate and held eachother while singing songs). Fathers did the same with their daughters a few days prior.
It actually sounds really sweet, but a little weird and I imagine awkward.

Basically what we have here is young christian girls being initiated into a very light, decayed form of a kind of priesthood. Protestant theology has every believer as a priest. I know people who do this kind of stuff. THis is good in of itself, but the people who do these things (those hellfire baptist types) typically approach sex as dangerous and shameful. In the end it is not rare to hear stories of newly wed brides being terrified of losing their virginity on their wedding night and they feel shameful afterwords.
